When people discover their family’s dark secret, usually it has something to do with sex. Secret kids, secret affairs, secret siblings, secret gay relationships and even secret incest. At least, those were the kinds of stories I was reading in a Reddit thread.

But then, amidst dozens of stories related to scandalous matters, one Redditor shared the following: “My Aunty did in fact have my dad's vinyl copy of ‘Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band.’ They've been arguing about it since the 70s.” 

I love that this qualifies as a deep, dark family secret, and I especially love that this argument has raged on for half a century. It’s the kind of petty feud that almost makes me hopeful about mankind, whereas all of the other stories below make me think we’re hopeless as a species.

A great-grandparent of mine shot a burglar. The cops came, took a statement, and removed the body. That was pretty much it. No court, no lawyers, nothing. 1940s.

My grandpa went to her work, killed her in front of her coworkers and then killed himself. She had young children.

Water_Meat 2mo ago My great-great-grandmother killed herself by refusing to eat and willfully starving herself to death. My great- grandmother killed herself by PUTTING HER HEAD IN THE OVEN. (There was a note so it definitely was suicide) It's made me realise that IF I'm ever to end my life, I'm honour bound to do it in the most metal way possible, which has actually saved my life more often than I'd like to admit. Most of it is because I think of that, and the whole absurdity of the thought process helps knock me out of my funk.

My wife says she's found some evidence of this since I told her. ZoeySpark 2mo ago My cousin is adopted. My grandma told me shortly before she passed. Confirmed it was true with my mom, who forbade me from telling anyone else. My cousin is in his 50's now and both his parents are dead. Не has a younger brother (about 9 months apart) who was conceived naturally. No clue if they know or if my other set of cousins know. I hate secrets but | can't betray my mom.
