20 Sets of Movies People Would Use to Introduce Aliens to the Whole Film Medium

What if you met someone who had never seen a movie? Maybe they’re a space alien visiting Earth or they were raised underground in an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt situation. After explaining everything else about the world, including The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, their cinematic education becomes your responsibility, but where to start? The most acclaimed movie? Your personal favorite? How could you ever pick just one?

One Redditor thinks you shouldn’t. “You’re tasked with introducing three movies to someone who has never watched a movie,” they posed to r/AskReddit. “The criteria: a movie that scared you, a movie that made you laugh out loud, and a movie that had your mind blown at the end. What three movies do you pick?”

Here’s how their fellow Redditors answered…

bmbmf1916 . 5y ago Pinocchio, Blazing Saddles, and Frailty (Pinocchio is fricking disturbing don't judge me)
Ginger_Chick . 5y ago . Edited 5y ago Jaws, Super Troopers (is it better than Monty Python? No. Is it fucking hilarious? Yes.), and Memento.
averageman420 . 5y ago Shadow people, the idea is what got to me. Tropic thunder which is more clever than I'd first thought. Predestination, just a crazy movie.

AVEC Ashford3 5y ago 1. The Strangers 2. The Hangover 3. Shawshank Redemption
BohnerSoup 5y ago 00 The ring (saw this movie in 6th grade, | didn't sleep for a week), office space ( still one of the best comedies I've ever seen), Django Unchained ( to be honest this movie blew my fucking mind the whole way through, same can be said for Pulp Fiction and Interstellar).
I_DRINK_ANARCHY 5y ago The Descent (scary) The Losers (funny) (I was gonna say a Mel Brooks movie, but a lot of his humor is parodying other movies, so too much would be lost in this imaginary person) Parasite (blew my mind)
TheBurningBride . 5y ago Hereditary (honestly one of the scariest films I've seen, and to me, is more than just a horror movie, explores other themes like grief) The Mask (childhood favourite, still makes me laugh) Knives Out (one of the most well written murder mysteries I've seen to date)
ChipChocolateHI 5y ago The Shining - why I would be introducing someone to film via a horror film is beyond me but the shining really uses the medium in a simple but effective way. The Birdcage - it's funny as hell, and a straightforward movie with a great emotional core. Plus you'd be introducing this person to Robin Williams. I see someone wrote The Other Guys. That movie is hilarious but it's dependent on you knowing the genre. The Sixth Sense - again a straightforward film that has an ending that requires you to think back on almost every event in the film at the end.
gwalt51 . 5y ago Paranormal Activity: Considering they've never seen a movie before then they would probably think this is real Dumb and Dumber: My personal favorite comedy of all time The Departed: Not necessarily a mindfuck but it has one of the best Twist endings I've ever seen
bewarethebfg . 5y ago . Edited 5y ago 1. The Fellowship of the Ring (scary bilbo) 2. The Two Towers (nobody tosses a dwarf) 3. The Return of the King (my friends, you bow to no one)
dirtybacon77 5y ago 5 year old me would have chosen: Poltergeist Airplane Blade Runner Hasn't changed much since then.
