30 of the Most Corrupt Organizations in History

There was a brief moment in my life where we at least got to pretend that our country wasn’t rife with corruption. That’s long over now, and I think it’s fair to say that we’re living through a peak on the line graph of corruption throughout recent history. Which really puts some of our current bad actors in rarefied air.

Of course, it’s nothing new. Corrupt organizations have arisen regularly throughout history, and they tend to stick around for a while. After all, especially now, taking down a large corporation feels tantamount to conquering a mid-sized country. I’m just saying, I’d rather go to war with Madagascar than Nestlé

As for the absolute top of the list when it comes to corruption throughout time? Redditors made their suggestions, collected below.

Jarnkaminen 1mo ago FIFA or IOC (International Olympic Committee) surely are among them. Insane open corruption. I would not be sad if they disappeared. Not for the people.
Green-been77 1mo ago The Mormon church
planx_constant 1mo ago Phillip Morris / Altria / RJ Reynolds / any tobacco company. They sell addictive poison to people which acts on a slow enough timeline that they get decades of sales out of the deal, and leaves their longest-standing, most loyal customers with potentially years of medical agony. They also paved the way with the tobacco lobby for the industrialized climate change denial industry on behalf of fossil fuel companies. Many of the most successful anti- science climate lobbyists got started trying to prevent tobacco restrictions in the 80s and 90s.

reflect-the-sun 1mo ago The UN. A friend of mine used to fly helicopters for the UN flying humanitarian aid into and out of international conflicts. Не said he's sure he flew more cash and weapons than actual humanitarian aid and no one batted an eye. TIL. Strongly-worded letters are expensive (the UN received $67 billion in funding in 2023)
DogsRnotPeanuts B 1mo ago Sadly, most humanitarian organisations. 90% of whatever you donate goes in other people's pockets. The number of millionaires CEOs in non-profit organisations is staggering.

Roguewind 1mo ago Going off a basic definition of corrupt being acting dishonestly for the purpose of financial gain or power - I'd go for an organization that's entire brand is that it's inherently good, has existed for centuries, and during that time has abused that branding in order to influence events to its own benefit. The Catholic Church.

SpookasemSkermun... 1mo ago Edited 1mo ago South-Africa's government (Pre & Post Apartheid) ANC has had 30 years to recover from the effects of apartheid, they literally have done NOTHING to rectify the mistakes of the past, just using their current power to line their own pockets and get family and friends into positions that they are not nearly qualified for. Cadre deployment is real in South-Africa. The ANC literally owns a mine together with an oligarch that they run for funds funnelled to their own bank accounts. Paul mashathile literally owns a house and a few planes worth more than
