Boxing aficionados and college kids cooking in their dorm rooms have a reason to mourn together.
Two-time heavyweight champion, entrepreneur and electric grill namesake George Foreman died Friday at the age of 76. Sports fans mourned the legendary athlete, who defeated boxers like Joe Frazier during his storied career, while TV enthusiasts remembered one of Foreman’s more controversial endeavors: serving as a dose of much-needed charisma on George, his critically-panned 1993 sitcom.
Foreman isn’t the only star whose presence boosted an otherwise mediocre TV program. In the mid-1980s, Lucille Ball starred as an unhoused woman in Stone Pillow, a made-for-TV film that elated audiences and bored critics. In a recently-unearthed interview, the actress revealed her intentions of fostering “care for the homeless,” with the movie, but reviewers took away a completely different message from the CBS flick. “You have to love Lucy a lot to sit through Stone Pillow. And even that may not be enough,” read the L.A. Times write-up of the 1985 film.
Ball’s performance may have only garnered a few laughs, but there’s no shortage of hilarious tweets from this lovely Monday, the best of which include musings on diet soda budgeting, Bugs Bunny’s on-brand 9/11 experience and the classification of bamboo.
