Sometimes Adam Sandler can surprise his fan base with a great performance, especially when he thinks an Oscar might be within reach. But, The Waterboy wasn’t one of those performances.
Ariana Grande might differ from general public opinion, but the Wicked star has long been open about how The Waterboy brings her to tears. She’s spoken honestly about how the world’s cruelty toward the standout SCLSU linebacker makes her cry every time she rewatches it.
In a recent episode of Variety’s “Actors on Actors”, Grande sat down with Sandler and explained just how deeply the plight of poor Bobby hits her right in the medulla oblongata.
During the conversation, the pop star praised Sandler for his latest attempt at an Oscar-worthy performance in Jay Kelly. “Your character is so heartbreaking,”Grande said. “I cried five times. Not choking up and holding back, but tears streaming out and fully breaking down.”
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and to their own feelings. Still, it’s curious that out of all of Sandler’s more tear-worthy performances, in films like Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, The Waterboy is the one that truly gets to Grande.
