Oh, how times have changed.
It’s normal for an SNL cast member to have a stand-up show on the side. But lately, Tommy Brennan and Kam Patterson — two of the five new featured players on Saturday Night Live — have had an unusually busy touring schedule, all while the show is in the middle of Season 51.
They’ll both be touring across different cities, and it’s unclear how they’ll juggle SNL’s demanding schedule with their own tour dates. But given the public announcements, it’s clear they have permission to pursue their stand-up careers while still being part of the SNL cast.
Perhaps, with such a large cast, they’re free to miss a show or two. This might signal a new way of working on the Saturday Night Live set, because in the past, Lorne Michaels wouldn’t allow cast members to skip an episode. ‘If I let you miss shows, I have to let everybody miss shows,’ he once said.
Maybe that’s why Michaels has expanded the cast so much — to have multiple options when scheduling becomes a real pain. Because the show must go on.
