26 Jobs That Sound Made Up But Are Real

Not long ago, I met a guy who had been a “Puppet Wrangler” on Sesame Street. While that might sound like he had to lasso Cookie Monster after an Oreo binge, a puppet wrangler is someone who takes care of puppets and prepares them for shows. They’re basically hair, makeup, wardrobe and maintenance all in one for puppets, but when the job gods created this position, they decided to use a word that makes someone sound like a puppet cowboy.

I didn’t know that job existed until I met him, and it turns out there are plenty of other strange jobs out there, as evidenced by Redditors’ responses.

DaddyBeanDa... 1mo ago Edited 1mo ago My buddy used to work the midnight shift at the power company, seated at a desk in front of a wall full of analog gauges. Every so often, he had to write down the values of certain gauges, and if anything was out of spec, he was to call someone to deal with it and go back to watching his gauges. Не never had to call anyone.
JDRUMMERSON . 1mo ago My friend goes from gas station to gas station measuring that a gallon is a gallon. Bureau of Weights and Measures.
wolfhavensf 1mo ago Clam census taker
Deadlifts4Days 1mo ago Met a guy who's wife job was to go on movie sets with animals and watch the making to ensure that no animals were harmed. Which allowed them to put that disclaimer that you see on the movie credits. I believe she worked for the humane society. Made me happy to know it's more of a third party and not just saying that to cover their ass.
TerraCetacea . 1mo ago I know of a guy who works for Starbucks getting paid an obscene amount of money to fly around the world taste testing coffee
buckyhermit 1mo ago Futurist. Basically someone who is given a lot of data about a certain situation and asked to predict what will happen in the future for that situation. At first I thought it was psychic woo-woo, but apparently it is because people who are farther away from the situation can often see things that people on the inside fail to catch. Has nothing to do with being psychic, but more to do with being analytical and observant of details.
Visual_Rice_4381 . 1mo ago I knew a guy who did street marketing for Budweiser. Не was paid very very well to travel all over the Midwest, in a brand new super nice jeep, and go club to club to party and buy people drinks (with the distributors credit card) to get people to go harder and buy more.
rubysundance . 1mo ago I used to know a lady that worked for a company that bought blocks of resort condos for time shares. Her job was to go incognito to resorts and stay for a week as a guest and then write a report to the parent company on her experience and advise if they should invest in the resort. She basically traveled to all the cool vacation spots and enjoyed herself for a living.
shittin_glitter 1mo ago Eyeball harvester. She would get called in to remove the eyes of organ donors once they passed.
Waterlou25 1mo ago My uncle makes all sorts of maps for the city. I guess I knew people made maps, but I thought it was an entire department. Not just a guy in his basement that had contracts to design all sorts of maps for all sorts of reasons. Не also always has contracts coming in. I didn't realize new maps were always being made.
Public-Education4228 . 1mo ago Pet food taster someone actually gets paid to do that.
Ent_Trip_Newer 1mo ago While bartending in Las Vegas, I met a lady whose job was to keep anything negative that happens in Vegas out of national news. I.e., while I lived there, a person took a bus full of passengers hostage. It was all over local TV news, but I found nothing on the national networks.
BlixaBargfeld 1mo ago Cattle inseminator. Quite high paying, but you have to be ok with reaching shoulder deep into the behinds of cows. Met the guy at a rock festival. Super nice and funny guy.
teach-sleep-wine . 1mo ago I worked at a bank as a teller and I met the head taster at a big brand (think Dryers level brand) ice creamery. Of course my question was How in the world does one get that job?!? Не has multiple degrees including a PhD and a couple masters degrees. Yeah... dreams do exist.
daggersrule . 1mo ago I sold a car to a dude who gets paid by the government to go from town to town tightening the nuts/bolts on bridges.
snarfdarb 1mo ago My buddy is an ocularist! Не makes glass eyeballs!
JellyfishFit3871 . 1mo ago When I worked in radio, I had a friend who referred to his profession as tower monkey. Не was the one who climbed those big radio towers to perform maintenance and install new equipment. Nice enough guy, but absolutely insane (in ways that didn't relate to climbing large structures at 8am.)
Simple-Section7217 1mo ago Back in the 80s, my best friend introduced me to her sister who was one of less than a dozen color experts in the world. She worked for Revlon, Glidden paints, etc. She could look at a color and tell you exactly how many shades of each color it would take to recreate that color, or any given color. She was incredibly rich

szydelkowe - 1mo ago I do not know her personally, but I know of a death doula that basically visits people and talks with them to prepare them for, well, the process of dying.
mikehawksux . 1mo ago I knew of someone who was a chicken veterinarian. They only treated chickens and basically put them down from a public health perspective. Would go around to all the farms and euthanize the sick ones so that all the other ones didn't get sick. In hind sight, makes sense. At the time I was like wait what how did I not know this was a job
cas_29 + 1mo ago Safe cracker. My former stepfather can open any safe or lock. Не traveled to businesses and private residents to assist if a safe malfunctioned, key was missing, or password forgotten
