Last night, Conan O’Brien took to the stage to host the 97th Academy Awards. His presence was a welcome reprieve from four-time host Jimmy Kimmel, and O’Brien kept viewers on their toes with jokes that went over attendees’ heads, a musical number reminiscent of when The Simpsons was actually good and an accidental Nazi shoutout.
But although O’Brien and the Oscars stage was obviously a winning combination, the rest of the victors in the building came as a bit of surprise. After what may be somehow the most boring and scandal-filled awards season in recent memory, Sean Baker’s Anora dominated the ceremony. The shocking sweep was bad news for Conclave fans, Demi Moore truthers and the mysterious folks still holding space for “Defying Gravity,” but great news for Mikey Madison’s attempt at a Brighton Beach accent, as the film landed five Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Actress.
In fairness, for all its faults, Anora carries an important message in these trying times — how deep-seated hatred of a dumb rich guy can bring even the most disparate folks together.
The funniest people on Twitter are more than familiar with such a feeling, and started the week off right with some hilarious tweets. Today’s funniest involve misconceptions about Sex and the City, Timothée Chalamet’s Curious George cosplay and a new TikTok challenge (sort of).
