31 Spooky Stories from People Who Believe Their House Is Haunted

If you believe in ghosts — or as the more enlightened call them — “entities,” you’re aware that their creepy tricks aren’t relegated to October. In fact, some people are haunted for years on end, like the Redditor who says they “lived in a house with activity” for 12 years, where strange voices, slamming doors, running footsteps and flickering lights were all run-of-the-mill experiences.

They went on to add that these entities “started throwing things” while the house was being renovated, but they ignored the behavior because it didn’t hurt anyone. One day, though, the Redditor and a friend were in the basement when the door suddenly slammed shut, the lock clicked and someone started laughing. They were stuck there for two hours. That’s not very nice!

Other Redditors have revealed the eerie things they’ve seen, heard or felt, including a ghost nanny, a man in the corner and a doppelganger house.

iMostLikelyNeedHelp 6y ago A lady who had 2 husbands die on her in the same house. That's the house my dad decides to buy. The first one hung himself from the rafters in the garage and the second one fell ill and died in his bed in the basement. I lived in the basement room and often just felt like I was being watched all the time. The bedroom in the basement has a secret storage room behind a bookshelf with a locking latch. I would always wake up to find the door wide open. It happened so often that
1LT_Obvious 6y ago Edited 6y ago lived in a house that seemed to be haunted by doppelgangers. Every event that happened never involved some mysterious figure, but a known person being in a place where they should not have been. Here are a few examples. was a teenager at the time, and was instant messaging my gf at the time with my webcam turned on. I had the viewer up so that could see myself in the webcam. Behind me, there was the stairs leading up (left of camera view) and the entrance to the living room (right of camera view).
coolicidal 6y ago I had fallen asleep at night with my fan running, and woke up freezing - I turned it off. Not long after, I woke up hot, and turned it back on. This happened several times. The last time, I woke up hot once again, and the moment I opened my eyes, I heard the pull of my fan and looked up to see it slowly start speeding up. I said, thank you, and fell back asleep. + 1.7K ...
Hobo56hills 6y ago I used to live in an old big 5-bedroom house with 6 other people. My so and I shared one of the rooms. I saw a stranger in my room when I was in my 20s. It wasn't exactly visible, but I somewhat knew it was right there in the corner of the room. My so was next to me sleeping. While I had my eyes open, I knew it was there. So I closed my eyes. I tried to wish it away. I opened my eyes, and it was now next to the bed, looking at
kingpickles98 6y ago . One night when I was about 12 I was drifting off to sleep then I clearly heard a baby laugh for 1-2 seconds. Presumed it was just my imagination and went to sleep. The next morning my sister mentioned that she'd been woken up by the sound of a baby crying. I don't really believe in ghosts but I've never been able to explain that. 518 ...
Imported_Thighs 6y ago Closest I've got to a haunted house is a haunted room: I used to sleep on the 2nd floor (the bottom one being the 1st) and my sister in the attic. She used to have sleep paralysis often. Then she moved out and now I have her old room. She no longer has sleep paralysis, but I do. + 12K ...
Nai75 6y ago Moved from the US to the UK and our parents bought an old beat up house. It still had lead pipes for the water. Nightmare all on its own. Anyway work proceeded on the house whilst we lived there. We started seeing bright lights in the corners of rooms at night. Foot steps on floor boards, the house had carpet. I was about 6 at the time and started getting woken up in the night by a little girl, who would dance on my chest of drawers for me. I was fricken terrified. My mum just fobbed
MTSwagger 6y ago I watched one of our cats being pulled backwards about 5 feet by her tail. She was walking through the dining area and suddenly was sliding backwards, as if someone was pulling her by her tail. Only there wasn't. She freaked out and tried to run, but couldn't immediately as something held on for a brief second before letter her go. I tend to think that was the handy work of a 4 or 5 year old girl ghost who hangs out and she just wanted to play with the kitty. + 6.5K ...
7ofCrows 2y ago I lived in an apartment for 10 years, and both the basement and the backyard were full of dark spirits. I was scratched and pushed, had my hair pulled, and there were creepy whispers through my bedroom window. My night terrors started there, and I have them occasionally to this day. The apartment itself definitely had something too. The kitchen cabinets would open and close, and sometimes things would get thrown at me while I was cooking. The entire neighborhood had an eerie vibe. It was all colonial era buildings with most of the original structures. For
StarSonatasnClouds 2y ago Lived in a haunted apartment, my family moved there when I was turning 15. I had experienced demons a few times, and ghosts. My brother, mother, and stepdad experienced odd things happening. My younger brother saw an apparition outside the building amongst the trees. It definitely has traumatized me. I do get anxiety but time helps. I'm 35 and will still struggle once in a while with sleep because of it. But I've definitely gotten better with it over time. At the time, I really had no other choice but to live with it, and accept it
poopman16 2y ago i lived in a haunted house for 4 years and some change from 5-6 to 10-11. it was bad. on top of extremely traumatic things happening in my childhood, the haunt was bad. shadow people standing in doorways when i was home alone, saying nothing but i could feel evil. i was an insomniac for a VERY long time and slept in school because i was too scared to sleep at home. bed shooks, voices talked, people carrying on conversations in rooms i was not in. our family of 6 all slept in 1 room for the last
YEET9011 2y ago There is only one and I'm not sure what it was. Back in 2007 I believe, I was living in an apartment building in a little town called West Milton, Ohio. I was playing the Wii by myself. It was dark outside. I remember a shadow being forming on the wall to my left. I was the only one in the living room. Parents were asleep in their room. The shadow was moving towards me and raised up what looked like a hatchet in it's left hand. It chased me through the halls until I got to
nalliesmommie . 2y ago My dad grew up in a haunted house. If my mom is away, my dad needs to sleep with a light on, at 71 years old. That is how traumatized he is from this childhood home. Не will not discuss it either. Which is a total bummer to me. 11 ...
Ballhouse 2y ago I bought a 1 bd 1 bath condo in my 20's. I had a nightly visitor that would haunt my dreams. I dealt with this spirit on a regular basis. Не would usually sit in the corner of my bedroom just out of site, but sometimes he wanted my attention. Не had a hold on his family and would send his wife and child to get me to open up/become comfortable with his presence. The child would frolic around my bed, and the wife would stroke my legs and arms. would become very relaxed with the playful
The_last_melon1 2y ago Yes I've lived in two. In my experience with the first, it seemed to bother the people in the home that were most scared of the presence. I didn't give it the time of day and I have a very strong faith, I didn't believe it was a spirit, I don't believe in that. believe that it's demonic so I just didn't pay it any mind. It would appear as an apparition to three different people, touch people, talk etc. In the second home I had something, technically, assault me during my sleep at night in one
ardentvix 2y ago My son and I moved into my dad's apartment in NYC, which he had been living in for about 20 years. Не used to see apparitions and was more sensitive to that stuff. It was November and I was getting ready to leave for the day. That morning felt weird. My dad had gone to work so I was alone with the baby. It felt like there were a bunch of people that I couldn't see. I turned all the lights on, TV on. It literally felt like I had people all around me. I heard whispering
joyousconciserainbow 2y ago Yes. My family pretended it wasn't real but the lights would go in and off, the TV and radio acted of their own accord. My desk would be moved in front of my door every time we left the gouse for more than 2 days (you would have had to be IN the room to move it as there was only one door). Things would disappear and be found in other places and sleep was never through the night. I have tons of stories, which Bbetween natural and supernatural are extremely effed up. And when you include my
2y ago Very much so. Nightmares every night, sightings of a tall, hooded, robed, pitch black shadow all around the place, especially at night, heavy footsteps and whispering and deep, masculine voices in empty rooms at night, beds shaking and a relative physically attacked... It absolutely had a negative impact on my psyche for years after. 29 ...
sadetheruiner 2y ago I lived in a haunted house from 10-18, I hated the ghost that lived upstairs and it regularly terrorized me. My mom knew the place had ghosts so her buddy was married to a dude who was Wiccan and he came and buried some crystals. Things were great for my mom afterwards but I still saw them. I moved to the basement when I was 15, the spiritual presence was much more amicable down there and things were fine till I moved out at 18. + 39 ...
CarChaseCity 12y ago My mom's convinced that the house I lived in until I was in kindergarden was haunted. Apparently the previous owner was a nice old lady and she died in the house before we bought it. She has a lot of stories about hearing doors creek, voices, and footsteps in the hallway before my sister and I were old enough to walk. Pretty standard ghost stuff. But the weirdest part she talked about is that sometimes in the middle of the night when no one was in my room, my mobile would go off and my crib would
lamHeretoSayThis 6y ago I lived in an older home for about 5 or so years. My step dad, who knew the man who had lived there before us, told me he hung himself in the attic. I honestly didn't think much of it, that is until I heard the footsteps. Like clockwork, every night at 3 a.m. I would heart footsteps walking along the length of the attic, which would go over my room. The steps were heavy and you could clearly tell the pace was at a normal walking speed. It sounded like a man contemplating something, thinking about
Neqi999 6y ago As a kid I would make stupid videos with my friends, and sometimes I like to rewatch them and cringe at our shenanigans. Quite recently I rewatched a video a friend and I made in 08/09. The video consists of our usual fucking about, halfway through the video there is a short 2 second clip, wherein my friend is flailing a toy sword around and screaming in my room. My friend is sitting with his back to the open door. A dark figure is seen walking down the hallway past the open door. The figure is only
typewrytten 6y ago Edited 6y ago From ages 5-17 i lived in a house with activity. It was all pretty basic run of the mill stuff: footsteps, voices, lights turning on and off, doors opening and shutting, batteries draining, etc. If we started renovating, which we almost always were, they'd get more active and start throwing stuff. I got used to it. They didn't hurt us, so we just let it go. Even my father started believing after a while. But the worst thing they ever did was while we were moving in. I was 5. My friend and I
12y ago Pretty sure my grandmother's house is haunted. One time I was walking out of the bedroom and as soon as I opened the door a ghostlike hand reached for me. I jumped back and shut the door. Another incident at same house. I was outside with my dog and she took off running and barking towards the driveway. I saw someone/something walking down the private drive towards her house. I said Grandma, who is here? The dog stopped in her tracks, stopped barking, and ran back to me. I couldn't see anyone there anymore. Grandma didn't see
Havingabreakdown2 2y ago Lived in a hunted apartment for about 2 years. I never believed in spirits until I wasn't given a choice. There was some seriously dark things living in that building. Scratched, choked, lights turning out, doors slamming open and closed, shadow figures, night terrors, had a hand grab my ankle and try to pull me out of bed, constant state of dread, the apartment across the hall from me had serious poltergeist activity- their door would open at random when they weren't home and their tv would blare static. Footsteps following behind you up the stairs. Family
MaryJaneTrims 6y ago Lived in a house from 1938. I would wake up and sit up in bed every single night at 2:59-3:01am. I thought I saw something move quickly out of the corner of my eye on occasion but assumed it was me being sleepy/bad vision without my glasses. One night the curtain on my closet moved. I pulled the lamp chain and the room lit up. My husband thought I was crazy. I saw nothing so I pulled the chain again to turn off the lamp. I tried to sleep again but a few minutes later I heard
_SilkKheldar_ 6y ago Lived in a basement apartment with a roomate in college back in 2010. We were eating dinner in the living room watching a movie one night and his bedroom is like 3 feet away from the couch we're sitting on and closed over but not latched. So we're eating dinner and watching this movie and then his door starts opening and creaking so we pause the movie and watch as the door swings slowly open all the way. It stopped there and we looked at each other and claimed a breeze or a loose hinge. Then the
FynnCobb 6y ago A little backstory. Growing up, my brother and I lived with our single mother. The house was a little 500 square foot home, but we were young so it wasn't a huge deal. My mom remarried, and the newly weds decided to tear down the old house and build a ranch on the land. Strange, but explainable, things started happening after we moved back in. One of the strangest things to happen was when my brother and I were in the house alone. We were hanging out at an island in the kitchen, talking about what teenage
6y ago We lived in a haunted pub on the site of a former catholic abbey that Henry VIII had destroyed. We saw some weird shit. The weirdest was the insectocutor in the kitchen. Something peeled it apart in the night. No sign of a break-in, all the doors were locked and the alarms set. It wasn't smashed, not an explosion, the metal was pealed outwards. A couple months later we had an incident in the cellar. The entire pump system blew out, ruining £1k of beer. Th engineers could not find the cause of the fault and just
Cloud1017 6y ago When I was a kid about 8 or 9 years old, I had a tv stand in front of my window. The lights from the street always were on so in the dark I could easily make out the outline of where my TV was. I started seeing a shadow figure of a girl standing right next to my TV. I could make out her figure so clear. Hair and everything. I spent nights just looking at her.. i couldn't even sleep. One night I got sick of it and threw a pillow at her. As soon
Twigsnapper 6y ago Edited 6y ago My uncle's house out on a very eastern part of NY was said to be haunted due to the family that used to own it in the 1800's decided not to give it to the stableman and sold it instead. Не and the maid were said to have haunted the place. We always used to joke that you would hear people or things moving at night but since the house is so old, we used to just laugh it off. My uncle's friend had her and her sister stay over the house one night
