One of TV’s most iconic bars may be opening up shop across the pond, as U.K.-based Big Talk Stores gained permission from CBS Studios to develop a British version of Cheers. While the cross-Atlantic television trade usually happens in the other direction, with British shows like The Office and Ghosts getting Americanized adaptations, this marks the rare occasion where a quintessentially American show will be exported to the Brits. Big Talk’s CEO Kenton Alley said the opportunity is a “huge honor” and that it will be a “huge challenge” to nail it.
Elsewhere in the world, Flinley Craddick and Australia’s adaptation of The Office has gotten a big seal of approval from the World’s Best Boss. The Australian version marks the 13th iteration of the U.K. series that debuted on the BBC in 2001 and then exploded in popularity thanks to Steve Carell and NBC. The Office AU has already been receiving flack for its female-led twist, but during the Prime Video Presents: Trailblazers event, Felicity Ward, the show’s lead, revealed that The Office co-creator and star Ricky Gervais is “very excited about a female lead — just in case anyone is angry.”
