Live from New York, it’s Jean Smart!
The initial slate of hosts and musical guests have been announced for Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season, with the Emmy-winning Hacks star taking the reins for the premiere. Despite Smart’s prolific comedy career, this will be her first time hosting the show. After her, Nate Bargatze, Wicked’s Ariana Grande and Beetlejuice star Michael Keaton will take the reins. And after them, John Mulaney will return for his sixth SNL hosting gig alongside first-time musical guest Chappell Roan.
As SNL looks to the future, one actor reflected on the show’s history and how he almost played a part in it — literally. Emile Hirsch was set to board a John Belushi biopic back in 2013, and shared that the director of the project asked him to gain 100 pounds to portray the SNL legend. While transformations like that are par for the course in Hollywood, this particular request came before the project was even greenlit. The actor shared this anecdote on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast and said that had he agreed to the proposition, he’d have been “the biggest sucker in the known universe,” especially considering the project fell apart before it began.
All I know is that the comedians on the timeline are certainly pulling their weight. Today’s funniest tweets include those about a jobseeker swinging for the fences, a series powered by a communal disdain of Chevy Chase and a looney 9/11 survivor.
