Actors used to go to Japan to make ridiculous commercials, because before the internet was popular, it was really hard to discover those. They weren't proud of those commercials, so they tried to hide them as much as they could for as long as they could. Then, the Super Bowl ads started to become extremely popular, and their prejudice went away just like that.
