Lorne Michaels decided to cut a Zohran Mamdani joke from last Saturday’s Weekend Update. On SNL, plenty of jokes get cut from sketches — often for timing reasons. But this one might be different.
Colin Jost delivered the fake news: “New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she would block Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s plan for free bus service in the city, saying that ‘they can’t take money away from the struggling MTA.’ But I got to say, that makes no sense. I mean, the bus has always been free. Just walk on with a knife.”
The punchline got a decent laugh, but co-anchor Michael Che stole the moment with his reaction: “That’s how you hold a knife?”
After a back-and-forth of knife-holding demonstrations — and plenty of laughs — the audience clearly wanted more, not less. So when the bit was missing from the official recap, fans spoke up.
“They should have kept it in,” argued u/dead_ahead. “WU is getting shortened and it’s a shame. WU is the one part of the show I genuinely look forward to.”
Weekend Update usually brings in random desk characters, but with the Epstein files out, the segment stuck to straight jokes — so the Mamdani bit was likely just a time cut.
Luckily, people on Twitter never get tired of jokes. Today’s funniest include gummy-bear power banks, a method for catching people cheating with AI, and a reminder of Black Friday madness.
