Cartoon jokes are getting a little too real.
It’s not the first time an animated TV show has predicted something that later became true in real life. So it’s no surprise that fans started pointing out a special moment in SpongeBob SquarePants that seemed to predict the future.
The iconic Nickelodeon cartoon remains one of the most accessible kids’ shows that parents can enjoy, too.
For instance, take the SpongeBob SquarePants Season Four episode “Selling Out,” in which the greedy Mr. Krabs sells the Krusty Krab to an ultra-wealthy tech enthusiast who replaces the love-based assembly system for the greatest burger in Bikini Bottom with an automated conveyor-belt operation that churns out Krabby Patties made of gray sludge. No generative artificial intelligence was used in this gag, but somehow, fans say, it’s the perfect metaphor for Gen AI.
The ‘Selling Out’ episode was originally written as a satire of real fast-food chains and their mass-produced menu items, but today the scene feels like a metaphor for companies forcing AI on us no matter what — while also replacing real workers.
In the creative space, this AI innovation doesn’t feel real, yet many companies like Coca-Cola keep on pushing it. But don’t get confused — this is far from true inspiration.
If you want to find true inspiration — and some laughs while you’re at it — Twitter is always the place. Today’s funniest involve a strange-looking yoghurt, carrot hot dogs and Moe’s prank phone call.
