20 Science Facts That Sound Like Hippie Nonsense But Are Actually True

Right now, we’re kind of in the middle of an anti-science crisis. There are people who believe vaccines cause everything from autism to traffic, climate change isn’t real but the chemicals the government trails through the sky do… something, and their crystals tell them when their plants are sad. These people vote. Some of them provide healthcare.

Unfortunately, the line between science and obvious wackadoodery isn’t as clear as we’d like. We’re not saying you should stop taking your medication in favor of water that once touched water that once touched essential oils. But ecosystems and physics and bodies are weird, and a lot of how they work sounds like the ramblings of tinfoil fashion influencers.

That’s why user anime-is-dope asked r/AskReddit, “What sounds like pseudoscience but actually isn’t?”

maxwolfie . 1y ago A family member was recently experiencing vertigo issues. She told me she had the crystals realigned in her ears. Bullshit metre went to level 11 but turns out it's real.
aravenlunatic . 1y ago That I need to put metal in my body, ie iron
DblockDavid . 1y ago Placebo effect - your mind can genuinely heal your body just by believing it works
GlorifiedDissident . 1y ago . Edited 1y ago that talk about you changing personalities when switching languages apparently has truth to it
Hardy-fig-dreaming19. 1y ago That the water content of bamboo is affected by what phase the moon is in
TitShark . 1y ago Having blue eyes can make you prone to sneezing when exposed to bright light
explorerdoraaaaaa 1y ago Red heads need more Anaesthesia than non-read heads. (Not sure if this fits the bill, but it's always been fascinating to me!)
. 1y ago Quantum mechanics. All of it, but especially antimatter and the way the little bits pop in and out of existence.
Stachemaster86 . 1y ago Crazy to think cooling your wrist, behind the knee or inside elbow can cool the whole body due to blood proximity to the surface.
. 1 1y ago The illusory truth effect. People will believe something just because it is repeated, even when they know that what's being said is not true.
ChronoLegion2 . 1y ago Seeing with your tongue is possible by wearing a special helmet with a camera and an electric plate on your tongue that transmits low-voltage signals via the plate. The brain will interpret that information through the visual cortex.
1y ago The act of fermentation to remove anti-nutrients. Sounds like some crunchy mom propaganda. But in reality there are much more nutrients in your food that you can't process because of an accompanying anti nutrient. Lacto-fermentation removes some of these and make nutrients more bio-available
rainbow_drab 1y ago If you hold a pencil between your teeth, forcing your mouth into a grin-like shape, it will make you evaluate your mood more positively. Your brain responds to body movements and postures, and this way you can trick the brain into thinking you've been smiling all day.
SailorVenus23 1y ago When an amputee is experiencing phantom limb pains, massaging their stump and then the space where the limb was actually does help reduce the pains, especially if the person is already on the maximum dosage of pain meds and can't have anymore. Hearing the hands against the sheets where the limb would be tricks the brain into thinking that it's still there, so it stops the nerves from overfiring as much.
TeaMistress . 1y ago . Edited 1y ago Using clove oil to treat mouth pain - which sounds like essential oil BS, right? But it works. About 13 years ago I had my wisdom teeth extracted and wound up with dry socket in my two lower incisions. It was hell. Nothing worked. Went back to the dentist and he packed the incisions with clove oil-soaked gauze. I had zero belief it would help, but it really did. Since then I've heard of it used to treat all sorts of oral pain like canker sores, swollen spots, etc.
inkyblackops 1y ago Ketamine Therapy. It's usually put in the same category as ayahuasca or other spiritually-enhancing drugs. But ketamine and other psychedelic substances actually increase neuroplasticity in your brain, and allow you to kind of overwrite certain habits. It's insanely helpful in cases of Anhedonia, PTSD, and addictions therapy. When paired with a session of psychotherapy, it can really make an impact. I really have hope for the future of mental illness healthcare.
Linkums e 1y ago . Edited 1y ago Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for depression. I told my doctor it sounded like pseudoscience once a long time ago, but I later found out that it really is a legit thing. I haven't actually done it myself though, and I've heard personal reviews on both ends of the spectrum.
thugarth 1y ago Edited 1y ago I'm no expert but this is based on my firsthand experience: Taking vitamin D supplements makes me feel significantly less depressed. Like, I have the potential to be normal, if I've consistently taken it. And if I haven't, I will definitely be depressed, even if everything else is going great. Now, vitamins aren't exactly pseudo-science. They are, in fact, actual science. But I had a hard time taking certain people seriously about them. But damned if it doesn't make a demonstrative difference in my life
Sonova_Vondruke . 1y ago That cosmic rays (neutrinos) are responsible for a lot of random computer errors. The smaller components are and the less electricity the need makes them more susceptible to interference. They carry very little electrical charge but enough to flip zeros to ones. The wrong flip, and oops not working correctly.... temporarily. This is why turning things off and on again fixes so many issues.
sneakerreppers . 1y ago The gut-brain connection is wild. Those trillions of bacteria in your gut? They're chatting with your brain and affecting your mood and thoughts. It's not just trust your gut - there's a whole nervous system down there. Scientists are even looking at treating mental health issues through the gut. Makes you look at your stomach in a whole new way.
