47 of the Funniest Burns from the Week of September 1, 2025
The similarities between Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation and Emily Brontë’s classic novel appear to be in name only. Literature and film fans were both horrified after watching the new trailer for Fennell’s upcoming romance flick this week, questioning how the Saltburn director managed to turn such a beloved work of gothic fiction into a whitewashed mess.
Beyond criticizing the casting of white Australian Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, who is a man of color in Brontë’s book, fans took issue with the movie’s overly sexual marketing, jarring electronic soundtrack and bare-bones poster, which appeared to pay homage to the racist 1940s film, Gone with the Wind. “Wuthering Heights starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi featuring Charli XCX on the soundtrack is kinda the matcha Dubai chocolate Labubu of film,” wrote one fan wrote.
“Emily Brontë is rising from her grave as we speak because why did they turn Wuthering Heights into Fifty Shades of Heathcliff and Cathy?” asked a second, while another poster wondered why Fennell didn’t just write a horny period piece of her own instead of opting to “terrorise” Brontë.
Fennell wasn’t the only one to face some of Twitter’s hottest burns over the last seven days, though. This week’s funniest roasted Fifth Harmony’s reunion, Tom Holland’s filmography and the Joel McHale-ification of Harry Styles.
