Art often asks us to ignore the confines of reality, but not everyone appreciates that. On the heels of a Night at the Museum reboot announcement, we’re reminded of the time the British Museum certainly didn’t, and took a break from hoarding stolen artifacts to address the first film’s implications.
When the museum’s curators were treated to an advanced screening of the film in 2014, they were “aghast” at the onslaught of egregious historical inaccuracies, and issued a statement accordingly. Yes, the entire plot is about exhibits coming to life after closing hours, but claiming that Pompeii erupted with lava is apparently a bridge too far. As a refresher, the lava scene also involves figurines of Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan being saved by a life-sized monkey that pees everywhere, but I guess that part was fine.
In another debate of accuracy, a Redditor has pieced together a Flintstones and Jetsons theory that will send a shiver up your spine. In their explanation, they posit that the two shows don’t take place in different time periods at all. Instead, they exist simultaneously, as a response to a global extinction event where rich people took to the skies while the poor were left on Earth to drive barefoot and domesticate dinosaurs for household tasks. You may be inclined to poke holes in this theory and argue against it, but just a reminder: We’re talking about cartoons, here.
Thankfully, our current reality is pretty funny, and we have the tweets to prove it. Today’s funniest posts include those about an ominous emoji, a cultural dish and a terrifying horror movie idea.
