Kermit the Frog is famed for making audiences smile and proving that it is possible to escape a nearly four-decade-long toxic relationship, but The Muppets’ leading amphibian also has a brand new claim to fame: pissing off several students at the University of Maryland.
The East Coast university announced that the beloved frog — portrayed by puppeteer Matt Vogel — would serve as the commencement speaker for creator Jim Henson’s alma mater come May, and the revelation miffed some arguably ungrateful soon-to-be-graduates. “It’s a little silly, having a puppet as a commencement speaker,” senior Andrew Thompson lamented to the New York Times over the school’s upcoming ceremony, which has been unofficially dubbed the “ker-mencement.”
Though Kermit has remained tight-beaked about controversy, the same cannot be said for SNL stalwart Kenan Thompson, who recently opened up about how his struggles with chronic pain negatively impacted his quality of life. “I noticed that I would get hoarse a lot easier when I’m doing the show. Losing my voice quicker, but also uncomfortable sleepless nights because I’m burping up acid, just kind of hiccuping all night,” he told People of “suffering in silence” with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
