23 Industries That Are More Sinister Than We Realize

As adults, we’re aware that certain industries aren’t what they seem, but some of the corruption that takes place is downright incomprehensible without insider knowledge. One Redditor explained that the funeral home industry is rife with fraudulent behavior, which runs the gamut from creating a high markup on caskets to selling body parts on the deep web and giving families fake ashes after pocketing the money.

Unfortunately, that isn’t the most sinister industry Redditors have spilled the tea about. More heinous trades include flower shops, cruise lines and the entire tomato industry.

Akillis81 3то ago the HVAC industry. Techs are trained more to sell systems and not fix them. Every single part in that furnace can be replaced. They are simple machines, nothing changes. Sometimes you have to cross reference other brands, other fans, other motors, sometimes you have to pop in a generic board and make it run how you want it to. I noped right out of that industry after the boss told me to sell a new system to an old couple who only needed about $300 in repairs. 9 Share Reply ...
crimsonnargacuga e 3то ago Retail furniture. A certain blue and yellow retail furniture company comes to mind. I worked there. The customers, the process, the overload of work for barely above minimum wage, the evil fake managers, the dystopian corporates who barely seem human when you try to have a normal talk with them, the ecological catastrophe....etc etc... 3mo ago Investotron69 The art industry. The entire industry is essentially a tax dodge and a buddy system. It works by an artist creating something and having it appraised for, say, $5000. Then a millionaire buys it for that $5000. Next, they get it appraised for $10,000, then more later as they want to increase their asset base. When they are to sell off stock or other assets to pay their loans, they use to live, and they have to pay taxes they have this painting appraised again. Now it's worth saying $500,000 ( likely more just throwing a number out
3mo ago Has anyone said Baby Formula yet? Check into Nestle's campaign to exploit rural families in Non- Westernized countries. They lobbied for years with gala cruises and sports tickets to get with charts made by their marketing people to be medically relevant. That way they can tell breastfeeding moms their milk isn't good enough and their baby isn't fat enough, then force them to provide formula or else their child can be taken away by CPS. I wish I were making this up but I'm a PhD student who studies medical anthropology and global justice. 22 Reply Share
jedrekk . 3mo ago Cut flowers. If you buy cheap cut roses in Europe, they were probably grown in Africa. In the US, they come from Latin or South America. Their cultivation is energy intense and creates massive amounts of pollution. Transporting it creates a huge carbon footprint. Most of the money is made by American/EU companies, and not the growers. Mizard611 3то ago Not all but a lot of non-profit/welfare organizations. The way they pocket people's money is extremely scary, there is a lot of them involved in trafficking, and it gives a really bad name for those organizations that are actually there to help people. 16 Reply Share ...
Shakooza 3mo ago Edited 3mo ago Car sales - People think they know how trashy it is but it goes far beyond what most can imagine. I had a friend that became a finance manager. I ended up going out with him and his car sales crew for drinks one night. For three hours I heard them laugh and joke about their heinous acts. I heard dozens of stories about how they targeted the elderly and women. Swooping trades, over charging, lying about loan rates, holding back incentives and outright intimidation were all topic of discussion. They talked about how they made
SeeMarkFly 3mo ago Edited 3mo ago Auto towing. If they can't fix your car, they keep it. There is no incentive for them to fix your car when they can own your car by NOT fixing it. Once they own the car, THEN they can fix it. 61 Reply Share ...
Kitten-Eater . 3то ago Former car mechanic here; Odds are high that your local big brand name dealership workshop is waaaay shadier than your local back-alley independent workshop run by some fat sweaty guy called Bubba. + 80 Reply Share ...
unluckyateverything 2mo ago University/College international student recruitment. The schools themselves generally act ethically, but there is an entire economy built around the industry that is filled with fraud and unscrupulous practices. 77 Reply Share ...
jodkalemon 3то ago Call center. Training automatic communication on the clock fucks you up. Met people who were in the industry for some years and who had complete private conversations without remembering one word the person said. Not in the sense of forgetting but in the sense of just not listening. + 219 Reply Share ...
MeatVulture 2mo ago The funeral home industry. I saw a video once Trafficked with Mariana Van Zeller, the funeral home industry is involved with underground body part sales on the dark web! It's crazy!! We think we're burying our loved one and only the outer shell is there 3 Reply ...
bearetta67 3то ago Chiquita Banana and any of the banana republic companies. These are companies that essentially bought entire countries in central America. Bought, paid for, and own all of the local utility companies, and they control the government. They're all behind a lot of assassinations to control these countries and keep them company owned. + 1.6K Share Reply ...
hughmann_13 2mo ago The tow truck industry in Ontario. A lawyer in Toronto had to flee the entire fucking country after standing up to them as the cops outright said she couldn't be protected. Their activities to control various parts of the towing industry in Ontario included arson and murder
LordylHopeTherelsPie 2mo ago The adoption trade in Ireland. The nuns made millions creating shame around single motherhood and then created an entire industry to sell babies and use the surplus for labour in industrial schools. And collected millions in donations from parents who bought babies for decades. + 1.4K Reply Share ...
YardSardonyx 2mo ago Edited 2mo ago The electronics industry is actively killing and destroying the habitats of gorillas, chimpanzees and elephants in Congo due to the extensive and often illegal mining of coltan, an ore used in the production of modern phones, laptops, tablets and more. And it's pretty awful for the human (sometimes child) laborers too You can help by recycling your old phone instead of throwing it away or keeping it in a drawer forever + 2.4K Reply Share ...
MiguellstNeugierig 2mo ago Edited 2mo ago Kpop It's really sinister, the process of how people train to even be elidgible to become a kpop idol. They're basically quasi slaves to the companies, have lots of personal restrictions from diet, to residence to even relationships. If they break through and get a great career, awesome, remember to pay the company's share. But if they don't, it's all for nothing and you're thrown out Some things look too squeaky-clean, you shouldn't be afraid to look behind the curtain + 2.6K Reply Share ...
Jigsaw115 3mo ago Fucking nursing homes. I didn't think the worst part of ems would be learning how most nursing homes in my area treat their patients. But it is. By far. + 15K Reply Share ...
Mimmzy 3то ago The Tomato industry. I went to a lecture for extra credit in college on the history of the tomato. I was expecting to hear how people used it and where people started growing them and what not. What I got was essentially a full season of the sopranos. Extortion, murder, blackmail, vandalism, you name it...the tomato industry was rife with the worst shit + Reply Share 17K ...
akalias_1981 3mo ago Cruise Lines. Man overboard tech exists that would drastically reduce the number of lives lost at sea but it comes at a cost. The large cruise line I worked at wouldn't even consider it unless a competitor did it first. It will never be implemented. + 883 Reply Share ...
furious_george3030 3то ago This will get buried but the Aquarium industry is awful. The amount of death and fish we just throw away would shock you. On top of that so many shops sell fish to people who are not setup properly to take care of the animal. + 9.1K Reply Share ...
e 3mo ago Sure_Disk8972 I thought working at a local flower shop would be rosy and idyllic until I was told to upsell grieving widows on already overpriced casket sprays. + 26K Reply Share ...
CapnMaynards 3mo ago The comic book industry... where to begin? The near century-long battle for creator's rights and all the shady shit that's gone down there. The amount of backstabbing, credit theft, and exploitation baked into Marvel and DC is straight fucked. The working conditions of the creators themselves is garbage. Low rates, long hours, zero benefits, tight deadlines, enormous pressure... substance abuse is not uncommon. And no one can say shit because there's a thousand guys willing to take your job. 8 Reply Share ...
