21 Parts of Adulthood People Weren’t Told About

It seems unfathomable in our Pixar- and Bluey-dominated culture, but the entire concept of childhood is very new. Back in the day, as soon as you were big enough to carry a bucket, you participated in the adult world right alongside the rest of your family, from running the household to toiling in the factories to getting married off at the first sign of the ability to produce your own children. It was pretty bad. That’s why we stopped.

But these days, despite having at least 18 and often many more years to prepare, there are parts of being an adult that are completely hidden from you until you’re dropped into it, naked, cold and with no idea how to cook a steak. Forget taxes and parenting — we’re talking some very basic facets of life that not only aren’t taught in school but nobody even talks about. That’s why user haseo8998 asked r/AskReddit, “What’s an adult problem nobody prepared you for?”

7y ago I can now afford the games but don't have enough time to get lost in them.
7y ago Taking care of your parents as they get old.
aajmac 7y ago Having to pee 4 times a night
ymaface 7y ago I wee when I cough or sneeze sometimes. That's new
OLL RisingxRenegade 7y ago That toilets have a seal that can break and unleash poop water on your floor if you flush them
Butidigress817 7y ago No one told me how much it costs to maintain a home, much less upgrade it.
tashera 7y ago How to decorate a house. What looks good together, what doesn't.
WeAreAllPolicemen 7y ago Ear hair. Body hair? Sure. facial hair? Absolutely. But ear hair? I was completely unprepared for this.
DoJu318 7y ago Ass hair So much ass hair, like a little chewbacca growing out of my asshole.
ByThorsBicep 7y ago Waiting for it to finally be late enough to go to bed. Seriously, how do I get so tired?
ninjapimp42 7y ago How much effort it is to keep old friends. Extra hard mode: making new friends after 30.
StephenHawkingsBlunt 7y ago Maintaining a real relationship can be serious work at times. Also good sex is usually messy, didn't realize that.
RyanGooding29 7y ago Credit ratings. Never got told about this at school, was shocked when I got refused for a phone contract and that was when I first found out about it...
petertmcqueeny 7y ago Credit cards. My WIFE taught me how debt works. Literally not one adult ever spoke about it in my presence until I was almost 30.
7y ago As a kid, an hour felt like an eternity. As an adult, an hour feels like a blink. You go from trying to waste as much time as possible, to rationing the shit out of it.
tbmc92 7y ago No one ever taught me how to plan for disasters and stuff. It took one hurricane evacuation for me to get my shit together and prepare for the next one.
EvyEarthling 7y ago Not having someone check my work and approve it. Wait...you just...trust that I did the work? And that I did it well? It wasn't until I entered the working world that I realized how reliant my education was on instructor feedback.
shamp00zle 7y ago For me personally its having more choices. My parents had kids early and immediately got strapped down with that financial burden. We didn't think about our future beyond the next month or two. Now that I've reached a point of financial stability, it's odd to think about things long term, and the decisions I will make in the future. It's definitely hard to learn not to blow your money and opportunities as soon as you get them when you grow up popr.
7y ago Something I'm slowly coming to terms with just with my summer internship - the pain of commuting to work. My 30-45 minute walk to work every day is almost 2 hours of my life, if I stop at the grocery store like I usually do. I get like 6 hours of life not spent sleeping or working. 2 of it is getting to work, which makes me even more tired, making me less happy for the few hours I have left. I love walking, so it's not like a huge loss, but the thought of just having to spend
Darrenwho137 7y ago Having to motivate myself to do things, rather than be told what to do or have some sort of structure in place to guide me through it. If I decide to stay in the house all day, there's nobody to stop me, and sometimes I still feel like I need someone to stop me.
darthbiscuit80 7y ago I know that a lot of these are going to be either funny or philosophical, but I'm gonna be real. Goddamn hemorrhoids.
