22 Wild Times People Lost Someone to A Cult

22 Wild Times People Lost Someone to A Cult

No one is immune to falling for the trappings of a cult. The right bait and subtly introduced ideology could yoink anyone out of reality.

One Redditor had a friend who almost kept joining cults. As they tell it, he’s “smart enough to recognize cults and be against them,” but he was very into veganism, meditation and yoga, and kept attending events like “yoga treat with free vegan food.” Each time, he would snap out of his treat-filled haze and realize, “Oh, this is a cult,” and start speaking up in an effort to warn the other people in attendance. The Redditor noted that this friend “still falls for the initial recruiting methods, but never actually joins.”

While there’s a lesson in there about the dangers of veganism, it also goes to show that tasty little treats can indeed pave the way to succumbing to a new god

Other Redditors have shared stories about people who left their lives behind and joined a cult, and it seems like the state of Tennessee is leading the charge in incubating new religions.

Young_Neil_Postman 7y ago Edited 7y ago has anyone heard of cults in Budapest? A family friend of mine was a prominent young chess player (a grandmaster - not a grandmaster, an international master with a GM norm) who, at a stressful crossroads in life, basically had a nervous breakdown at a tournament in Budapest and went outside and somehow came into contact with a cult. He's been there for a few years, within a couple weeks he withdrew all the money from his bank account and asked his family to not contact him. Apparently they later were allowed to and he spoke
Kronill 7y ago Little brother joined The Church of Christ in college and started quoting scripture at my family and I. His big one was dont suffer a non apostle which boiled down to if you dont share my faith exactly I dont want you in my life. I was the only one he talked to for a while, and it was pretty touch and go. Through some SUPER shitty events between him, members of the church, and other students he eventually came to his senses. Unfortunately he had a roommate all 4 years who basically turned him into an
jynn_ 7y ago My step mother and step sister were indoctrinated by the Church of the Redeemer. A few months after joining she started wanting weird things from their relationship, she expected my father (and all men) to be some sort of weird disciplinarian to her and her daughter. When my dad wasn't into it, the church/pastor encouraged her to divorce my Dad, which she did. I trusted her as a mother figure and felt extremely betrayed when she broke our family (for the second time) because of some ideology. I'll never respect anyone part of the Church of the
iseeaball 7y ago I lost an aunt and cousin to Weight Down Ministries. It's run by this woman named Gwen Shamblin. A real nut job. She lives in Franklin, TN in this huge mansion where she broadcasts live church webinars multiple times a week. People all over join in and host these church gatherings at their homes. They get you in by introducing it as a weight loss program. Simple. Lose the weight quick and easy and never gain it back. Eat what you want!! So you go WOW this sounds great! Then they slowly introduce the Bible and she'll
GraceMDrake 7y ago Two of my college housemates went out one evening to buy cigarettes, and came back converted to Scientology. One eventually got out of it, but it took years. The other, I have no idea. It was like a horror movie about pod people taking them over. + 11K ...
dougiebgood 7y ago - A friend of mine told he how she lost her friend to Scientology. It was more or less because they were residents of Hollywood and would walk down Hollywood blvd every day to go school. They'd pass the recruiting center every single day and pay no mind, but one day her friend decided to go in. She said after high school, her friend dissociated with her after realizing she wasn't going to be convince her to join. + 4.7K ...
SweetMamaJean 7y ago My mom's youngest sister is only a few years older than and I worshiped her growing up. She was so outgoing, creative, irreverent, and crass. She even lived with us for awhile after college. She and her husband joined a super conservative non denominational Christian Church and everything about her changed. She doesn't wear makeup or pants. She homeschools and won't take her kids to a normal doctor (it's witchcraft). That means she isn't allowed to get any medicine for her bipolar, either-just diet and essential oils. She isn't allowed to use her degree and they moved
7y ago My friend's girlfriend slept with one of his closest friends. They had been together nearly 10 years. After that he joined a cult called the Landmark Forum, which styles itself as group therapy but teaches you weirdass jargon and social techniques that make no sense. I could talk about it forever, but a year after he started going to meetings I told him not to contact me again - he had changed so much and his behavior was so uncanny and harmful to me that I no longer wanted anything to do with him. 29 ...
googlemaster1 7y ago . My dad liked the thrill of appearing on someone's podcast and quickly became a renowned leader in the flat earth movement. We had a falling out somewhere in the middle so I'm not sure how it went down specifically. + 39 ...
rodgeramjit 7y ago Slowly. My boss/friend joined a career advancement/save the world cult. At first he just started attending seminars and seemed a little more motivated and excited about life. Then he started strongly encouraging everyone around him to attend. Не started using odd language for normal everyday terms and talking about how life changing these things were. His attempts to get people to join became more overt, he started telling people they weren't really trying their hardest at life if they didn't join. Said they are responsible for their lives not working out if they didn't. By the end
pumpedmusic444 7y ago Oh gosh, I have first hand experience with this... It's just one of those things that's so surreal and weird. It just makes you scratch your head and wonder how the hell did this happen.... My sister's husband was a youth pastor and was an all around super cool guy. I looked up to him a lot. Athletic, musical, good looks, just overall an extremely bright and talented dude. Не met some people who run a restaurant called, The Yellow Deli, in Chattanooga, TN. They're also a cult called the twelve tribes. (Stay away!!) Some of their
7y ago My ex friends dad, I am not sure if you could call it a cult per say, but he belonged to one of those snake churches, followed Alex Jones, and spent all of his money on prepping, and he spent all of his time on different chat rooms and forums with other people like himself. I know it put a huge strain on the family. 216 ...
Annahsbananas 7y ago I lost my spouse and my three children from Evangelicalism. Many will say it's not a cult but having been a minister in an Evangelical church for 10 years I can assure you it is. My children were even filmed in the documentary Jesus Camp. If you have doubts the evangelical movement is a cult, go and watch that. I lost my children in 2009. For nine years, I have not seen them, heard from them or even received any written correspondence. At the time, my children were 9 months old, 5 years old, and 7 years
7y ago We didn't lose her forever but my aunt fucked off to a Christian commune in Sydney when she was eighteen. She was there for a few years. My other aunt lived in Sydney too and saw her occasionally but cult-aunt straight up pretended not to know her, I think you have me confused with someone else.... She came home when she was 22 with her fiancee. Now that they were engaged it wasn't appropriate for them to be under the same roof, even though they'd been living together for four years, so they made her move back
Eave22 7y ago My brother met a Jehovah girl, kept it secret for 2 years. They told her parents they'd only just met when he converted in secret, so to this day they think they only met 9 months before they got married (or she'd have to tell them she had a sexual relationship with a non-believer for 2 years). Then they announced they were together, got married and never came to a family birthday or christmas ever again. Given those are the only times you can get people together, you can see how often my brother is in my
gaslightlinux 7y ago I had one friend who kept accidentally almost joining cults. Не was smart enough to recognize cults and be very against them. At the same time he was into meditation, yoga, veganism, etc.. Не kept going to things like yoga retreat with free vegan food, and would realize half-way into the weekend retreat Hey, this is a cult! Не would start speaking up during the retreat trying to warn the others. Because of this he was actually persecuted by cults in both the United States and India. Не still falls for the initial recruiting methods, but never
ebzywebzy 7y ago My mother grew up in the exclusive brethren (also known as the Plymouth brethren). If you haven't heard of them before, basically they can't communicate with anyone who's not in the religion, no radios or tv's, extremely strict rules, women with long hair, skirts and scarves etc. Long story short because she would never have been able to go to university, my grandpa decided to get them shut up (basically ostracized from the community whilst also being in it), then excommunicated entirely. So all was (somewhat) well until my grandpa died, then my grandma went back into
FlyUnder_TheRadar 7y ago A friend of mine from college decided to attend what she called a Bible College in Florida after she graduated. The guy who runs it is a an absolute nut-job. Не was a big Evangelist preacher in the 90's who goes around spouting insane conspiracy theories today. Не has even made an appearance on Info Wars. This girl and I got along fine through college. She lived with my so and we were in the same major so we had a lot of classes together. I always knew she was religious and a little off but I
Crouching-Cyka 7y ago - Edited 7y ago My aunt's brother had schizophrenia and joined a cult in which one must worship pagan gods whilst drinking urine through the nose. His father, a 6'6 Israeli soldier, went to the cult leader's house and dropped him off a balcony. It didn't end well for any parties involved EDIT: The cult leader didn't actually die so nothing became of it. Also my aunt is not blood-related so her brother is not technically my uncle. + 1.9K ...
TopherTots 7y ago So I got out when I was 20-21. And by got out I mean was demonized and disowned by my mother. Who then married the cult leader after he divorced his wife for having an affair. Big ol pile of shit. Cult leader's wife was my ex-step-grandmother (long story, my mom's not great at picking men). But she's still in it now and won't talk to me, though she did try to make me see the error of my ways a couple months back (I'm in my early 30s now). Apparently the cult leader is dying of
klugerama 7y ago My parents told me when I was younger that they knew (casually, not like best friends or anything) married couple that joined the People's Temple in the Bay Area. They didn't go to Guyana. However, Jones had left some people behind to take care of the property. Approximately a year after the mass suicide the couple disappeared. Nobody knows if they decided that they wanted some grape Flavor-Aid too or if they were disappeared against their will. Sorry not much to the story. 1.1K ...
AllAccessAndy 7y ago She wasn't permanently lost, but my aunt joined the Children of God in the 70s. She was down in Texas doing student teaching and one day her roommate called my grandparents to say she hadn't seen her in a couple days and was pretty sure some people took her to Mexico. My grandparents immediately drove down to Mexico, hired a cult deprogrammer, and rented a house near the cult compound. They basically blew as much money as they could afford, but never saw her before they had to give up and go back home. A little while
