20 of the Wildest Ways People Got Scammed

If a website boasts a $400 kit that allows you to “make your own car,” alarms should go off in your head. If it were legit, car dealerships wouldn’t exist. Yet, one Redditor didn’t think through the finer details of his purchase, and received “a bunch of cardboard pieces” that “wouldn’t support the weight of one person” and “wasn’t street legal.” All of which is hilarious.

Other Redditors have recalled the times they got scammed to hell and back, and it’s eye-opening to know how many people are still using Western Union.

-Master-Builder- e 10y ago Someone pretended to be my friend for 2 years in order to steal over $5,000 dollars worth of items I accumulated over 8 years in an online video game. 127 Share ...

theshook 10y ago Was headed to a concert in CLE and found a parking garage. Dude was standing out front and said 20 dollars. Garage was right across from the venue so I agreed, payed him his 20 and he turned and sprinted down the street. Dude didn't work for the parking garage...I couldn't even get mad, just shook my head in awe of the chillness that the dude used to take my 20... 749 Share ...

10y ago A guy asked me for $5 because he was out of gas. Не told me if I gave him my address he would mail it back to me. I told him, no problem keep it. Then I watch him walk down the street and into a bar. 199 Share ...

lobsterandi 10y ago I was at this bizarre fair type of thing, and I fell for going into the tent which housed the 180 pound man eating chicken. I knew it was going to be cheesy and a likely waste of $2, but I had to go see it anyway. It was a regular man who picked up a plate of fried chicken and started eating it when paying customers came in. I wasn't even mad. 1.1K Share ...

12y ago I bought a 200 dollar gift card for flight voucher on Craigslist, gave a guy on the phone the card number so he could deposit it into his bank account. Не then never responded to me and 2 days later harassed me. I just felt like an idiot. Any ways to get back at him? I signed him up for cat facts, it was he least I could do. Share 3 ...

shazam99301 12y ago I responded to a Craigslist advertisement for front row tickets to see the acoustic Foo Fighter show in Seattle for $250. I Western Union-ed the money. Never did get my tickets. Bought another pair instead from a local guy. NEVER Wester Union money to someone you dont know. 2 Share ...

pearcheese 2mo ago When I was in high school working at subway some guy came in and did that trick where they ask for change and then end up confusing you to the point where you don't know what's going on. Не got $20 off me (subway). 81 Reply Share ...

dexcel 12y ago I ended up buying a very nice Swiss watch on the way home from the shops. Walking down the street minding my own business and I managed to luck in on this deal. The guy was legit as he had a BMW and watch brochures. Не even was kind enough to drive me to a cash point and I paid his asking price. Yeah I got scammed hard. Still have the watch. Worked for a year or so.

Nouls 1y ago As a teller manager, I have had a few elderly people who actually believe their grandkids are in jail, and need to take out 20k out of their accounts in cash, in order to bail them out. Literally tell them they are falling for a scam, and to call their grandkids in front of me. Of course the kid then answers. Their hearts are in the right place, but they need to think before they take large amounts like that, but also if they gave the scammers their personal addresses. 5.2K Share ...

fappyday 3mo ago My dad is an icon of the techno-illiterate old person. Не clicks on every popup, signs up for every email offer, and regularly gets his credit card number stolen by those popups that claim you won something, but you just need to pay for shipping. He's been doing this for years and JUST WON'T STOP. And there are millions of people just like this. They can't/won't learn to identify online threats. 2.8K Share Rep ...

skitch885 12y ago I'm a moron. When I was 12 I was in a park with a friend and found 42$ on the ground... Wanting to do the right thing, I found the nearest jogger and asked did you lose $42? his response was yeah! And I was running, trying to find it. who would lie about that? So I gave it to him.... Then he high-tailed It out of the park. Needless to say I wonder every single day since then now different my life would be if I had kept the $42. I probably could have afforded that

Dookiestain_LaFlair 12y ago I sent $400 to a website that had a kit where you could make a car yourself. When I got the box it was just a bunch of cardboard pieces that you put together and would not even support the body weight of more than one person and was not even street legal. Share 300 ...

B_For_Bandana 12y ago Edited 12y ago needed a new roommate, so I advertised on Craigslist. Someone replied and said she was interested, but couldn't move in until the start of the lease; she would send a check to hold the room. Cool. She sends a check for more than the first month's rent, saying I can just put it toward the next month's rent. I deposit the check, which the bank accepts. She emails again and says, oops, actually need some of the extra money back. Can I send her a money order? Of course I can. No problem at

12y ago Two of my friends wanted to buy really nice motorcycle, like a Yamaha r7 or something. They see one for sale on ebay for 2 grand in Alaska, the guy selling it claims he's getting deployed to Afghanistan and needs to sell it fast. They bid on it and win, Western Union him the money. Then a couple days later they ask me if theres anyway to get their money back. Nope. 20 Share ...

Ovary_Puncher 12y ago I bought a dozen donuts from my local bakery. I was walking home and two people walked up to me and the hot girl said Ooo, donuts! Can I have one? I said Sure! and she grabbed one. I didn't want her to feel bad about it so I said Yeah, they're just for me, I got plenty! Don't worry about it! Then she said They're all for you?! Well then, let me take some off your hands! She then proceeded to grab 5 donuts and the guy reached over and took 3 donuts and then they
