In 2020, a group of biologists succeeded in sequencing the genetic material of the illusive giant squid. Our fingers are crossed, but they’re now going to compare the giant squid’s DNA to that of its much smaller relatives, which will hopefully reveal information about its lifecycle, what and how it is so large in comparison to other crustacean and how it has adjusted to its dark, deep habitat.
