20 Experiments That Prove Science Is Terrifying

Nobody ever said science was pretty, and they’re not just talking about the sort of dweebs who tend to populate your average bio lab. Between animal testing, ruthless competition and enough volatile chemicals to level a city block, a laboratory could be more reasonably compared in nature to a war zone than a classroom.

But sometimes, science simply crosses the line. So-called academics have inflicted immeasurable suffering, treated ethical standards more like guidelines and generally monstered right out in the name of knowledge. That’s why user Abdullah2073 asked r/AskReddit, “What are some of the creepiest experiments ever done in human history?”

5y ago the soviets, tried to communicate between submarines by testing the supersticious belief that a bunny's mother feels if her children are dying. so they'd put mother in one sub and her bunnies into another. slaughtered the bunnies and waited for the mother to react all in the name of developing communications based on bunny slaughtering
rccpudge . 5y ago Finding anesthesia involved some awful experiments.
. 5y ago Maybe not the worst but.... Vipeholm experiments. Definitely cruel.
JasperDyne . 5y ago The video of Russian experiments in keeping a dog's head alive still haunt my psyche.
WackyWriter1976 . 5y ago Look up James Marion Sims - the father of Modern Gynecology and how he performed his studies on Enslaved Black women in America.
derlich . 5y ago USA tested the effects of decompression on dogs. The results were inconclusive other than the fact the dogs suffered an incredibly painful death.
shockwave-315 e 5y ago Camp Hero in Montauk, NY after the military left in the 50s or 60s. Rumors of experiments on kids. Kind of a Stranger Things inspiration.
fallingleaf271 . . 5y ago The first blood transfusion, sometime in the 1800s. A doctor injected a calf's blood into a madman. Не started to sweat and vomit, and he died soon after.
Retard_Obliterator69 . 5y ago John r brinkley transplanted goat balls into people to make them more virile and youthful and eventually just told them that it would basically cure anything.
Jogaila2 . 5y ago The CIA did experiments in Montreal where they used LSD in an effort to program assassins and then wipe their memories clean after for obvious reasons. A couple books were written about it.
5y ago Injecting pure water into the veins of captured soldiers. This would cause the cells to lyse (basically explode). It's super painful and deadly. This was a experimentation/ torture conducted by the Japanese I believe.
Lupercali . 5y ago The Soviets actually created two-headed dogs, by literally transplanting a dogs head onto the host of another living Dog. These experiments went on for at least five years in the 1950's, under the direction of Vladimir Demikhov. I first heard about it when | saw a photo in an old copy of Astounding /Analog.
. 5y ago The Tuskegee Syphilis study. Told African American males that the study would be around a year and that they were receiving free healthcare from the US government. The study actually continued for decades and its purpose was to study the effects of untreated syphilis. Treatment with antibiotics was created after a few years but the subjects continued without any treatment. Horrific.
cpasgraveodile . 5y ago Margaret Howe Lovatt and her independent work with dolphins (she had exactly zero professional or academic training in marine biology) at the behest of Dr. John Lily for a NASA-funded program is absolutely bonkers (her trying to teach dolphins to speak like humans do using laughably stupid methods, having sex with the dolphin) and when they decide the whole experiment is a failure it alls ends very, very, very sad.
Tea-Quirky 5y ago The USA 1944 experiment where they took 40 babies and locked them up in a room and gave them zero physical touch or affection to study the affects of skin hunger. Their other needs were meet like feeding, cleaning, but otherwise the staff did not touch or sooth or interact with the infants. They called it off when the babies began to die from lack of affection and even some of the babies later died afterwards it was called off.
idreaminwords 5y ago The Monster Study in 1939 was conducted at an orphanage. They were trying to prove that telling stutterers that there speech was fine would produce a change in their speaking patterns. But they didn't have stutterers at the orphanage so they just chose 12 kids with perfectly fine speech and attempted to induce a stutter by constantly accusing them of stuttering. The self esteem of the kids in the 'stutterer' group was destroyed and the kids all became incredibly withdrawn.
madeto-stray 5y ago I just listened to a podcast from CBC called Brainwashed, it's about these experiments being done at McGill University in the 50s and early 60s. This doctor, Ewan Cameron, would take people who checked themselves into the health centre for basic issues like post-partum depression and perform experiments: sensory deprivation, electroshock therapy way over the normal amount, putting people into comas and playing repeating phrases over and over to them (seen Stranger Things? They were definitely influenced by this). Oh yeah, and giving people acid without their consent. By the end some of the people would have
Killjoy905 5y ago So there was a woman named Hennrietta Lacks who was a poor black woman with five children, went to John Hopkins university one of a few hospitals that would see poor black people in its time. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer, the cancer was the first living human cells to multiply outside of the human body in a lab environment. Her cells are still alive and are being used in medical research to this day. Her family didn't know they had her cells until years after it had already been used to create new medicines and
Abrahms_4 . 5y ago I might be slow to get this in here but Unit 731, it was a Japanese unit during WW2 that did some truly horrific shit. Easily rivaled the Nazi experiments.
OffusMax . 5y ago The experiments on twins performed by Josef Mendele. The man was a monster who pulled identical twins from prison camps and experimented on them.
