The Season 51 premiere for Saturday Night Live had a couple of surprises.
First, viewers learned that Colin Jost is capable of more than delivering burns from behind the “Weekend Update” desk. Jost’s portrayal of Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, was scarily spot-on, with James Austin Johnson as Trump, delivering meta criticism of the cold open. Also to the sketch show’s credit, not only was Kam Patterson’s debut actually good, but they managed to address the many points of insanity the comedy world has undergone in the last few months — from Riyadh to the shakeups at SNL.
According to fans, though, the alleged shakeups weren’t enough. Though Lorne Michaels promised to reinvent the show, the premiere relied on the same formulas that worked in previous seasons, albeit with a different cast. Perhaps even truer to form is yet another comedian accusing SNL of sketch theft. Isa Medina, whose Instagram Reel involves a Latina ChatGPT who argues with the user, says SNL’s bit about CHATGPTio is a bit too similar to her own. Medina went on to explain that SNL cast members and writers follow her on the platform, and that when she posted her Reel four weeks ago, one of them commented positively before later deleting said comment, giving a bit of credence to her claims.
