September was full of attacks on comedy.
Jimmy Kimmel was unceremoniously yanked from the air, forcing everyone to rally behind their third-favorite late-night host in defense of free speech. He was reinstated sooner than anyone expected, and is currently doing his best not to disappoint us.
Unfortunately, this whole debacle has inspired Jimmy Fallon to explain his choice to remain apolitical in the face of ongoing censorship, citing the late Johnny Carson as a reason why. “We hit both sides equally. And we try to make everybody laugh. Our monologues are kind of, you know, the same that we’ve been doing since Johnny Carson was doing The Tonight Show.”
Fallon then continued by saying he just “keeps his head down” and “makes sure the jokes are funny.”
Of course, all of this is debatable, and Fallon’s spinelessness is appalling. What isn’t appalling, however, are the funny tweets from the month that just was. September’s best included those about the masculine urge to launder money, the danger of buying used manga and chihuahua feelings.
