31 Wild Secrets People Uncovered After A Loved One’s Death

I think it’s fair to say that most of us have a drawer, or a box, or a section of closet that we’d beeline for if a houseguest for some reason decided to investigate. Humans, as they live, produce shame the same way they produce excrement or carbon dioxide. These secret hiding places are an only half-metaphorical place to stick it.

The problem, of course, comes when you leave this mortal coil. With you gone, someone, at some point, is going to have to clean out every nook and cranny of your physical and digital domain, and that includes the parts you’d rather stay untidied. Redditors shared some of the wildest things they’ve uncovered after a friend or family member kicked off. Some are embarrassing, some are awe-inspiring and some are a strange mix of both.

Capital_Punisher . 14y ago At my Grandmother's funeral her boyfriend turned up. Although this doesn't sound strange in itself, we had no idea she was seeing anyone! Her husband (second marriage and of no relation to myself) had died shortly before I was born and as far as the rest of the family knew, she wasn't seeing anyone.
Basement Scrap Bin - A WW2 Nazi Luftwaffe belt buckle. From what my grandma says, he killed someone who was wearing it and brought it home from the war. Не loved the belt, but hated the damn buckle. So the buckle went into a scrap metal bin and stayed there for 50 years or so.
funkme1ster . 14y ago Edited 14y ago Going through my grandfather's house after he died, my parents found a small opaque pill bottle which had been labelled on the top OLD PENIS. At first, they were very hesitant to open it, but did and discovered it contains several one cent coins with dates from the early 20th century. My grandfather did not speak English as a first language, and if you say it out loud it makes sense...
Cathunamapa . 14y ago I found an old newspaper with my grandmas face in it.She was being arrested for armed robbery.Thats why she missed my third birthday.
The_Adventurist . 14y ago When my grand-aunt(? the sister of my grandmother?) died last year, she was given a military funeral and buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Why? It's classified... WHO THE FUCK WAS MY AUNTIE ALICE?!
Ming_Y 14y ago When I was younger, I helped clean my grandmother's house before she had to move. I then discovered a a cupboard filled with an assortment of jars and bottles. A lot of these things seemed like asian medicines; bottled ginseng, random roots preserved in alcohol, that kind of stuff. She even had a jar of wine with baby rats in it. However, that wasn't the oddest thing in there. One large jar had this dark red, thick liquid in it. It was labelled in chinese, which I couldn't read at the time. I brought it to my
coyotetrickster 14y ago | have a friend whose grandfather was a very conservative minister in Florida. I remember reading an editorial he wrote that was printed in the town's paper about how rock and roll was responsible for all of society's ills. When he passed away, his son was cleaning out his house and found a large wardrobe cabinet that contained a wide variety of dildos.
jakelovesguitar 14y ago I found a letter my dad had written to the court appointed psychologist during my parents divorce from ten years ago. Two most shocking things I found was that I was tested for HIV when I was five because I was having oral surgery and they tested my parents blood to make sure it was okay in case I needed blood. My mom tested positive for HIV. She still hasn't told my brother and I. Also my dad described that when the found his brother's body when he had a heart attack they couldn't actually take the
One of the holdings that was listed was a stationary store that was on the third story of a rather pricey building in the CBD & that from the accounts, made a surprising amount of profit. This was news to my dad and his brothers, who'd never heard of the shop despite being involved in what they believed was every aspect of the family business. Upon arriving at the stationary store they made a surprising discovery; the store was actually a very upmarket illegal brothel. Apparently my grandfather had been making a deal to sell the brothel because his health
Something innocuous 14y ago It's not so much something I found, but something I found out about my gran at her funeral last week. My Dad read the eulogy and described how she had been waiting at a bus stop in Winchester during World War 2 when she saw a (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-1flying_bomb) approaching. The engine cut out and it began it's deadly descent towards her. There was no place to take shelter, so everyone dropped to the ground. The bomb went off a few feet from the bus stop. When my Gran stood up she saw nothing but
linds360 14y ago My great uncle went through the depression and never trusted banks after that. When he died he left a treasure map with locations of all the places he'd buried money in coffee cans. We had to dig it up in the middle of the night so neighbors and passerbys wouldn't get clued in and grab shovels of their own.
opakanopa a 14y ago My grandfather passed away after crashing a plane he was restoring. All the newspaper articles I read stated he was 8 years younger than he actually was which I thought was strange. But when we cleared out his house we found his birth certificate that he had changed to make himself look younger. We are not sure why he did it. Either to get his pilots license ( ( he had had one years before and was no rookie to flying ) с or to get with the lady that was by then his fiance. A lady about 15
. 14y ago Not me, but a friend of mine's parents. Back in the 70s they were a young couple, not yet married, living together in a small town. Elderly neighbors were usually gossiping about the shocking and depraved things that must be going on in their home, group sex orgies, etc... At some point one of their uncles, who lived in the same town died. In his place they found dozens of boxes of nude photographs from the 30s and 40s, featuring -among others- most of those proper elderly ladies.
HobbsMadness 14y ago Not me, but happened to my father several years back. Не had an employee whose grandpa had passed away, so she asked him to help with cleaning out her grandpa's house for family heirlooms and whatnot. Не felt like being helpful so he agreed to do so. They were cleaning out the attic when my father finds an old looking trunk tucked away in a corner. Не opens it and is quite shocked to find a goddamn KKK outfit. My father's employee was absolutely horrified, as she had always known her grandfather as a very kind and
OsakaB 14y ago Sorry about your loss, my grandmother passed away about 6 mo ago too. When I was about 12 or so, I was helping her to move house, packing and carrying boxes. One box was labeled Old Photos or something like that, so I opened it up, expecting to find pictures of my dad and uncle when they were young. Instead, right on top, were 5-6 old pictures of my grandmother posing on a bed in various stages of undress. I quickly closed the box and put it away. That was over 15 years ago, and I have
. 14y ago I found my great-uncle's penis pump taking care of my great-aunt. I told my aunt about it, and all she did is laugh.
. 14y ago I had the opposite problem when my parents died. My sister and I went through their house - absolutely everything. I went through their computer. There was no porn, no drugs, no alcohol bottles. Nothing. It was actually frightening.
buy_me_a_pony 14y ago My grandfather passed a few weeks ago. Не was very big into genealogy and civil war history. At his service, my dad and his brothers were telling stories, and had mentioned their grandmother's maiden name and how she had immigrated from Germany. One of my grandfather's neighbors informed them that that name is German Jew in a hushed/how dare you mention it tone. So apparently, I'm Jewish, and my grandfather's neighbors are antisemitic.
14y ago My grandfather hasn't died yet, but he's so severely stricken with Alzheimer's that he may as well be. There's none of the same person in there. So much dementia that he could look out the window on a sunny day and not be able to piece together whether it's day or night. Anyway, we found he had a hidden collection of softcore, semi-pornographic Nazi propaganda. Apparently during the 1930's (but before WWII started properly), there was a big business boom in Germany of people taking advantage of the newfound popularity of the Nazi party and ideals, so
Ducky9202 . 14y ago Cleaning out my uncle's computer (so my mom wouldn't have to) found Disney porn. One classy uncle! | expected porn, didn't expect to find the Beast with a huge boner.
calicliche 14y ago Cleaning out my Nana's house (she had was a bit of a hoarder, especially as her alzheimer's set in before we were able to move her in with us) we found a plastic baggie with ash in it labeled Scroungy - her cat that had died at least 6 years before. Since we hadn't interred my Nana yet, we put the plastic baggie in the slot in the mausoleum between her and my Baba's (great grandma's) ashes. This is, apparently, illegal, so don't tell anyone.
ikolanul 14y ago First off, I'm sorry for your loss! It's very kind of you to take care of your family.:)) Second, mine isn't quite as funny, but when my grandma was really sick years back, she was doing her will, and there was suddenly all this talk about if they should include her in it. I kind of just brush it off, as I was 15 at the time, and didn't think much of it. But, the next summer while I'm with some cousins boozing, it comes out that one of my uncles has this love child for lack
AlysetheBeast 14y ago After my grandpa died we found out from a relative that my grandpa was a spy in WWII since he was German-American. Не was apparently pulled soon after completing his basic training with only a handful of other men. Не was trained in hand to hand combat and was an excellent marksman. Не even hurt his hip during training and later received an artificial hip. We don't know the extent of what he did during the war but when it was over, he was a translator at the Nuremberg trials.
kadmylos 14y ago After my my great uncle died I found out my uncle used to get him pounds of weed. Не lived with chronic pain, so it was then that I realized he was probably high all the time. Also realized what my uncle was always going out to his truck for all the time when he was over... Going through a box of my grandma's stuff after she died, I found an old photo of a hot blonde stripper doing a split. I don't think my grandmother was blonde... so that's ok. I kept it, but it was
PENIS_IN_ANUS 14y ago When my grandmother died I found letters from my grandfather talking about a kid he had with some young girl while he was out at sea (he was a captain on a couple of big ships). Не was talking about how this damn girl he slept with meant nothing to him. I found all the papers showing how things were divided after he died, and sure enough there was my unknown aunt. Haven't contacted her though. Not sure if she knows about me.
mountainlaure193 . 14y ago The same thing happened with my grandfather, but we found more than just marijuana and a dirty pipe. I came across an issue of Playboy from the 70s that included a naked picture of my grandfather on a float at a gay pride parade in San Francisco. Let's just say that I was traumatized for a while. We also found deep fried butter and leftover KFC, which were both pretty moldy and disgusting.
mina_loy 14y ago When my grandpa Johnny passed away several years ago, we were cleaning out his house and found some home VHS tapes. They were labeled Johnny XXX Volume I and Johnny XXX Volume II. Apparently my gpaw liked to make sex tapes. We never watched the videos for fear of what we would see, but I find humor in thinking that my sweet old grandpa was a freak back in the day.
. 14y ago Edited 14y ago My grandma died about 8 years ago. My mom (her daughter) had thought that grandma was an administrative assistant for the Mounties for her whole life, but after digging through her possessions, we found out she was a goddam intelligence agent/spy for the Canadian government during the Cold War My nana was James Bond EDIT: She was also a single mother raising 4 kids
Serrated_Banana 14y ago We were cleaning out my Great Grandmother's apartment after she died. She was 102 at the time and had still lived on her own until about a month before she died. She caught pneumonia and when you're that old it's easy to be done in. Grandma didn't really believe in holding on to much, so there wasn't a lot. But there was a lot of paperwork, her high school diploma, that kind of thing. So a couple weeks after boxing everything up, I'm going through all of her papers and stuff. Erotica. Handwritten erotica. She'd apparently been
mae1986 14y ago When we cleaned out my grandma's sewing room we found around 40 bottles of booze in various states of consumption, tarot cards, a ouija board, and Fanny Hill stuffed up in her closet in a cigar box labeled book. Thing is Grandma and Grandpa were pretty religious; going to church every Sunday and whatnot. It wasn't until Grandma was gone that Grandpa didn't stop going. So really, both of them went because they didn't want the other to know that they didn't want to keep going.
OrangePod . 14y ago Mom died. Just before: You've got an older sister out there someplace. Wow.
