21 Disturbing Things Trash Collectors Found in the Garbage

People will throw away just about anything without a second thought, which means trash collectors occasionally uncover horrors they’re not emotionally prepared to deal with.

One Redditor reflected on his brief years working in wastewater management where giant machines would plunge into the sewers and rake up all sorts of things. No one even batted an eye when it came back up with drugs, condoms, roadkill and/or suspiciously large wads of money. But the day it brought up a baby was cause for concern — and a police investigation.

Other Redditors have shared the deeply disturbing things they’ve found as trash collectors, and get ready to read about all kinds of abandoned body parts.

Grandmastrgusto 8y ago My father has been a garbage man for 40 years or so. A few years back he found a dead politician in his load at the dump. Не was held by the FBI for a night until he was cleared of foul play, yet he loves telling the story of that time he was on CSI Delaware, lol. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John P. spookycamphero 8y ago I didn't bother calling the cops but one of my drivers found a garbage pail filled with dead swans and geese, they were all bloodied and stuffed inside the pail to the top. I had to call the customer and ask him if hes going to kill animals at least place them in bags because the blood leaked over the edge onto my driver and his helper when they emptied the pail. + 17 ...
purplesounds 8y ago My Dad's friend was really into having exotic animals. I mean anything from baby alligators to spiders. Не was also a little crazy. One day one of his larger cobras got out and wrapped itself around his showerhead. Thus the obvious solution came to mind. Take a shotgun and blow it off his showerhead and then throw the carcas right on top of the trash. Next day the trash man opened up the can to a snake staring at him. Не got a heart attack and tried suing my dad's friend. I don't know how it was
hunter15991 6y ago Not a garbage man, but my uncle-in-law used to be one in Russia soon after the collapse of the USSR. Не said one day he saw a severed head in the garbage, significantly mutiliated, with a severed finger (one would presume the deceased's) jammed into the mouth. Не left that profession soon after for construction. + 2.4K ...
jayiscanadian1 6y ago Garbage man here 9 years and counting. Full skin and head of a pig also of a deer, the pig was laid of flat like a steam roller ran over it in the hopper. I have only ever puked once and that was due to buckets of rotten chicken in a jerk marinade, the smell was so strong my truck stunk for 3 days.
Tacotanner 8y ago I actually just started working as a garbageman recently. My first day on the job went by in a blur, but I distinctly remember one house that had dozens of plastic water bottles filled with urine. + 7 ...
Riversly 8y ago My grandfather was in the business and said they once found a missing person. In multiple quart size freezer bags. 40 Share ...
SaabinDeep 8y ago Full time garbage man in rural area of Pennsylvania. We had an Amish man who would process deer for people during hunting season. Не also had cows and pigs that he would butcher. Не hung the animals over the dumpster and skinned/gutted them directly into the dumpster. I walked back and flipped the lids open to find an entire dumpster full of guts, blood, and poop. The dumpster was so heavy that when we lifted it onto the truck, you could watch the trucks suspension drop from the weight. This happened every Wednesday for 3 months. +
Vegan_Hitler e 8y ago A drinking glass, which had been filled to the brim with human feces that appeared to be pushed into the glass by a penile object. + 43 Share ...
cerberdoodle 8y ago A box of prosthetic limbs. Some looked really old and rudimentary, some looked really modern and realistic. And they weren't all the same limb; there were full and half-legs, arms with hands, arms with hooks, just feet with those metal rods, and what might have been a peg leg? Also, this reminds me, I've found manikins and manikin parts more often than you would expect. + 1.3K Share ...
Georgeisthecoolest 8y ago I once did temp work as a garbage man (I was 18 and lasted all of 1 day before I quit) and one item we came across was a sealed urn with the deceased's name printed on the side. I wrote the name down to be able to add realism to the story I would later tell and it turned out it was someone my dad knew. + 3.4K Share ...

rynpaige 8y ago My friends brother is a trashman.....he had burns and melted skin all over his shoulders and upper back. Some asshat threw out a bottle of Hydrochloric Acid and when it was being crushed in the truck, the bottle exploded and shot acid all over him as he was walking away + 1.2K ...
sbb214 8y ago 311 in NYC gets all kinds of questions and these go into an internal report. One of the oddest questions asked: how do you dispose of a dead horse in the city? Weirder still, the response: drag it to the curb and it will be picked up by a garbage truck. 133 Share ...
8y ago Edited 8y ago My uncle was a policeman, and was flagged down by a scaffy (binman, trashman, whatever you call them) on his morning beat. The guy told him that there's a black bag next to some commercial dumpsters, and it's moving. The guy was too scared to open it, so my uncle did and it turned out to be a very small, malnourished Golden Retriever puppy. Не took him back to the station, and the Police advertised that he was found and asked his owner to come forward. Obviously, nobody is going to come forward after
KnuckleChildrenSoup 8y ago Worked at a waste water treatment facility back in my teens. I wasn't the one who found it, but was on site for the investigation. There are these giant mechanical rakes that plunge down into the sewer lines under the plant and pick up any trash. Rags, drugs, needles, condoms, dead animals. All kinds of stuff. The drugs and money seen aren't an issue. The baby that the rake pulled up was a concern. The cops were called and an investigation was started from there. Not sure what happened after that though. Nobody was updated once detectives
hotteststoryever 11y ago Some sick fuck had a trash can filled with rotting dead cats. The smell is unforgettable. + 407 ...
Moosepondvacation 10y ago Former Sanitation Department Supervisor - My guys called me frantic one day after an explosion in the hopper of the truck. Thankfully no one was injured, but I called the fire department and police always come on fire calls too. Turns out they had been watching the house we were in front of because the guy was cooking meth. Не threw away some of the ingredients and the pressure when it compacted caused it to explode. The best part was the fact that the guy sat out front watching the show in a bathrobe. Не eventually got dressed and
Tsquare43 8y ago My Dad worked for the DSNY for 20 years. Told me several stories of weird things he experienced and saw. The one that comes to mind is him and his partners found a human foot at some point in the mid 70's. A large black foot. They didn't know what to do, they put it in a bag and brought it to the closest police precinct and brought it to the desk sergeant. Desk Sgt asked what he could do for them, they pointed to the bag. Не promptly looked into the bag and and closed it.
Tenalp 6y ago I worked as a rural trash guy for a while. We had a pretty... thrifty setup. Pickup truck and a horse trailer. Every house I'd have to get out, pull bags out of the provided can and toss it in the trailer before moving on. Worst though was someone who put out a bucket of what I can only assume was waste from an RV's facilities. Damn thing wasn't even sealed and slashed all over me when I picked it up. 59 ...
