At the International Film Festival India, Chuck Russell revealed that his beloved comedy The Mask was originally conceived as a horror film. After directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and The Blob, New Line tapped Russell to take on the Dark Horse Comic. But fearing that the source material was too Freddy Krueger-y, Russell switched gears. After seeing In Living Color, Russell campaigned for Jim Carrey to star in the leading role with a more comedic bent, and used him as the “one-man inspiration” for what the film became.
