20 Crazy Stories from People Who Befriended Wild Animals

We’re all desperate to believe that we’re different in some way, which can be directly correlated to the number of people who befriend wild animals, get attacked by them, and after miraculously living through it, end up saying, “I didn’t think that would happen to me” on the evening news

That being said, some of these Redditors are built different, because they managed to strike up a kinship with an egret, fox or raccoon without having to get major facial reconstructive surgery. While these stories are inspiring, please proceed with caution. You don’t want to end up on a list of those who “somehow survived” animal attacks, or worse — on a list of those who didn’t.

cowgirl_meg 2y ago One time as a kid I got lost in the Rio Grande National Forest for while camping and in that time walked about 8 miles ish by myself. I was in a part of the forest far away from trails and there was probably no regular human activity. I came across a lot of animals that just didn't know to be afraid of people. When I sat down to rest mice came up to me and let me pet them and pick them up and even fell asleep in my hand, and I met a porcupine that
NeedsMoreTuba 3y ago Top Commenter When I was a kid, I made friends with a dragonfly at a cookout. Не landed on my glasses and hung out there until he saw a mosquito or a biting fly, and then he'd take off to try to catch it before returning. I taste delicious to biting bugs, so we both benefited from that arrangement. It was also pretty neat having a real-life dragonfly chilling on my glasses for everyone to see. + 17 ...
DobRex 3y ago I was sitting near a lake and a family of baby ducks crawled into my lap and ate bread from my hand while momma duck sat nearby and monitored the situation. It melted my heart and I'll never forget it. + 14 ...
smokeyvic 2y ago Australian magpies. If you can get them to trust you, they are lovely birds. I have magpie dad that prefers to eat meat from my hand rather than picking it up from the brick wall where I usually place the meat. Now the babies eat from my hand too. I love them to bits 3 ...
mommyraccoon 9y ago When I was about 5 or 6, my brother found some baby squirrels that had fallen out of their nest. I remember we made a little nest in a shoe box and fed them milk via eye droppers. I don't remember what happened to them, but I like to think they made it back to their mommy. + 19 ...
PaulHaman 2y ago Lizards. I have a community garden plot in Los Angeles, where there are tons of lizards everywhere. Mostly Western Fence Lizards. Sometimes I'll just sit in my chair, and a lizard will come up on the table next to me and just hang out for a bit. They'll also do it if I'm working on a project, they'll park themselves somewhere nearby and just watch what I'm doing. They've got a lot of personality. 10 ...
youhatetruth 9y ago I happened upon a hawk that was fowled up in some fishing line. After a few moments of letting it tire itself out at my approach, I gently slashed it free and gave it some water. It stayed for a while. It preened me and let me pet it. Eventually it gave a cry and flew away. It's the closest I've ever come to magic. 13 ...
2y ago | worked with tigers for a while, they're just big house cats. All cats are aholes, don't get me wrong but tigers are way more friendly than people think, they love a laser pointer and head scratches. Lions should be avoided though, fuck lions 3 ...
Lentra888 2y ago My folks used to camp quite a bit. One year, they tried a new campsite. There was just one other person camping in sight, and they got to be on friendly terms pretty quick. The first night there, they were swarmed with skunks. The other camper apparently knew them all by sight, and pointed out the timid ones my folks could ignore and the aggressive ones they needed to avoid. One of the timid ones even came up to the guy for head scritches. 3 ...
androgynous_potato 9y ago There was a chipmunk up at my family's cottage that would come and hangout with us every year. Не was super friendly and loved peanuts and cat food. Не used to sit in our hands and eat peanuts and if we had cat food on the porch he would help himself if the cat wasn't around. Eventually it got to the point that he would come and hangout with us even without food to lure him. Не would lay on the deck and fall asleep or curl up on our laps if we were sitting at the
Basdad 9y ago We live on a lake. About this time of year we saw a deer fall through the ice and begin to struggle. There were open channels of water along with the ice, we were able to get a rowboat out to her, and then able to haul her into the boat, she was exhausted, or near death. We got her back to our garage, laid her on some blankets and gave her warmed up milk and oatmeal. She was pregnant and after a few hours of being relatively still, she didn't appear to fear us, she started
giveit110percent 9y ago I was 13 and snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands. A young sea lion pup was swimming beneath me in relatively shallow water, about 15 feet. It kept swimming in circles below me, so i picked up the nearest thing i could grab, which happened to be a 8 inch stick floating by my head, and waved it at him to try to get his attention. It grabbed it out of my hand, did a loop, and dropped it in front of me. We played fetch like that until my parents literally dragged me out of the water.
9y ago Edited 9y ago I had a duck imprint on me follow me everywhere around the zoo. I had a wild rabbit sit on my foot. I have birds bros currently I have a hummingbird that's quite fond of me. All of the birds like to barnstorm me in the yard to let me know they are home. Hawks and such. My son has a dove that sits on his roofline looking for him by day and by night he has an owl buddy. whoo!? Whooo! I'm a natural man. Kind of like a crunchy hick snow-white. +
Bodymindisoneword 9y ago Believe it or not, in Brooklyn NYC there are possums. My best friend knew this and is a veterinary technician that literally captures and releases bugs in her house rather than kill them so this is her story. She sees a car pulled over with people standing around outside it late one night as she is heading home. She sees something in the road and thinks it's most likely a stray cat that got hit so she pulls over to see if there is anything to be done. It's a possum that is barely alive. SOMEHOW- she knew
TinyBahamut . 9y ago G An egret always waited for me when I got off work. I called it buddy. It would do a head bob at me. Не flew away from anyone else. 88 ...
cornnndog 9y ago Steve the fox that lived in my back yard. When I was in middle school, id have solo bonfires all the time, like a few a week. Не came and sat by the fire and slowly moved closer and closer to me every night. One night he came up and bumped my hand affectionately. It was crazy. Не let me pet him, which I've heard is insanely rare. This kept up all summer... Until they cut down the forest we lived backed up to, and I never saw him again. + 23 ...
thanks4yanksNspanks 9y ago I had my patio door open while watching TV in my apartment to get a nice breeze going inside. Then out of nowhere, a cat chased a huge-ass pigeon into my living room. The cat freaked out about being inside and ran out immediately. The pigeon said eff that and chilled in the middle of my living room until the coast was clear. So here I am, me and this pigeon watching Netflix together for an hour or so. Не decided to casually walk out when he felt the time was right, never to be seen again.
nekotaku 9y ago Years ago, a female raccoon was hanging around our house. I can't remember exactly how we got from me setting out crackers to her sitting beside me on the steps eating them. Or how many weeks it took for her to reach that level of trust. She was close enough for me to see she had a BB size hole in one ear. Anyways she had a litter of five and brought them to visit every night. Two vanished and other three grew up around my porch. I gave them cinnamon graham crackers. They still had to
rottinguy 9y ago Saw a squirrel literally BEATING THE SHIT out of a much smaller squirrel, so I ran over, and the big squirrel left, and the little squirrel was pretty fucked up, so I brought it to my porch when the big fucker comes down from the tree with ANOTHER little fucker i his mouth, gets to the ground and does at it like a pitbull with a squeaky toy. In all I rescued 3 very cute baby squirrels from that demon possessed mother fucker. Kept them healthy and and treated their wounds in a small box in my
_Afrodeity 3y ago I dropped some seeds for a crow that gave them to her babies nesting in a tree near my Uncle's place. Several months later I was back at my Uncle's place and while I was getting into my car to leave, a crow swooped down and dropped seeds on the roof before flying away. I thought it was pure coincidence until my Uncle said she was repaying me since all her babies had grown up and left home. 5 ...
