I was pretty disappointed to learn, quite embarassingly recently, that while the burning of the Library of Alexandria was certainly a terrible tragedy, the knowledge lost in the flames likely would not have led us to have futuristic technology any sooner. I suspect a certain program on the Discovery Channel is to blame for my firm belief that this event set humanity back by thousands of years and completely annihilated all proof of the existence of the lost city of Atlantis. You all know the one.
