What even is movie magic? In imaginative minds, the phrase conjurs mental images of robe-clad directors, actors, and actresses huddled in a forest, chanting over a bonfire for the success of their film or of a magic button that instantly transforms green screen backgrounds into detailed landscapes. Now, I have no evidence to suggest whether or not the former is a regular practice, but the second? Definitely not. In reality, movie magic is made in the trenches after hundreds of painstaking hours spent editing, tweaking, and perfecting every frame until the illusion feels effortless on screen.
