“I love the Emmy Awards’ competitiveness” is a phrase you probably never would’ve heard from the late Johnny Carson.
Despite his six Emmy wins and four-year run of hosting the ceremony in the 1970s, the late-night legend didn’t like the show’s competitive format. Instead, he wished that the Emmys were structured without genre-specific categories, like the Peabody Awards. “If Mary Tyler Moore deserves an Emmy, and she does, for her consistent quality, you give it to her,” he explained in a 1974 interview. “But you don’t make her compete against Carol Burnett. If Carol Burnett also deserves one, you give one to her, also.”
Nancy Cartwright’s creative expression also can’t be confined to one genre. The Simpsons star, who recently opened a Bart Simpson-inspired fine art exhibit in her native Ohio, hopes her work will encourage fans to express themselves. “I hope that they look at the art, and I hope that they get inspired, like the way I got inspired,” Cartwright said of her passion for painting.
