Fifteen years have passed since King of the Hill last hit the small screen, but for Stephen Root, revisiting life on Rainey Street was as easy as cracking open a cold can of Alamo. Ahead of the show’s premiere, Root spoke about his iconic character of Bill Dauterive, saying that returning to the series felt like “coming home and seeing your family.”
“We all feel like we have these guys in the back of our head(s) at all moments,” Root told Cracked’s Brian VanHooker of his creative process. That said, the actor did credit the show’s new showrunner, Saladin Patterson, with helping him apply a fresh “point-of-view” surrounding his role ahead of the revival. “There was a freshness that he brought to the show along with some new characters,” Root explained, “which juices it up a bit.”
Ashley Gardner is also examining her role in the long-running animated series. Gardner, who plays Nancy Gribble, admitted that just like her character loves her husband, Dale Gribble, she also greatly enjoyed working with the late Johnny Hardwick. “Johnny wasn’t a conspiracy theorist, but every now and then, he’d say something and I’d be like, ‘Johnny, what are you talking about?’” she remembered of the actor behind her on-screen spouse. “So, there was some similarity in terms of the vibe between the character and him as a person.”
