32 of the Bravest Things People Have Seen a Child Do

I wasn’t a brave child. I didn’t like being left alone. I made many a call from a friend’s house phone after the sun set at what was supposed to be a sleepover. I handled nightmares with all the aplomb of a spooked deer. Which, all in all, is fine. Children are small and often confused, so they’re allowed to be slightly panicked by a lot of things.

A thread on Reddit, though, collected the exact opposite. Children who showed courage beyond their years, in situations most fully-formed frontal lobes would wilt under. Keep reading for some truly inspiring stories that, yes, will also make you feel slightly like a coward.

herestolife6592 8y ago My brother's been working for my dad since he was a kid. One day when my brother was 12 or 13, my dad had to run some errands somewhere & left another kid who was like 16 or 17 in charge. Somehow, my brother ended up chopping his middle finger off with a woodcutter. The older kid lost it & started hyperventilating when he saw my brother's finger hanging by a thread, but my brother just found a phone & called 911 himself. Не ended up in the hospital for a week after they sewed it back
InsertWittyJoke . 8y ago This isn't going to be as heroic as some of the other stuff on here but when I was a kid I fell into the deep part of a local river and couldn't swim. My friend, without a moment of hesitation, grabbed onto the root of a tree and got half into the water, grabbed my arm and pulled me out. Without her I might have died.
8y ago I work for a group that provides gifts to life- threateningly/terminally ill children. I could tell you a hundred stories about these amazing kids, because that vast majority of them have somehow managed to make something of the shitty hand life has dealt them. However, perhaps the bravest story I have is of a little girl who donated her bone marrow to her older brother with a very rare bone cancer. Her parents didnt pressure her, she wasn't asked. She insisted on being tested and made the decision on her own. She's 7. How many adults would
. 8y ago An end stage 6year old telling his sobbing parents that it was gonna be ok and they'd carry on after he died. That one fucked me up for a long ass time. So young and so wise. And then he was just gone.
greentangent 8y ago When my son was 12 he got in between a bully and his victim and started mocking him. Не dared the kid to throw a punch and when the kid did he lowered his forehead into the punch. Then he did it again with the same result. I got the call from school before he got home and had all the details. After getting off the bus he went along his normal routine and said nothing. After an hour or so I asked him why he didn't defend himself, I sparred with him regularly and this kid
Mage3873 8y ago When I was 5 or 6 ish me and my cousin's were maybe half a block away from my house holding signs up about a garage sale we were having. Some dude in a white van pulls up and offers us all candy. All of us haul as back home screaming and running, but my one cousin, in the ballsiest move 5 year old me ever saw, snatched a sucker out of this dudes hand and then hauled ass. I thought he was gonna get kidnapped
Wisco1856 . 8y ago | didn't witness this, but my son's teacher told us. One kid was bullying another kid who is autistic. My 9 year old son got up from his desk, crossed the room, yelled at the bully, and forced him to apologize to the autistic kid. My proudest moment as a parent so far.
RedPlanit . 8y ago My nephew donated his bone marrow in an attempt to save his brother.
LIMWZ . 8y ago When our daughter was 3 years old she found a MASSIVE spider in the living room. She didn't like it. So she stepped on it. With her bare feet. Didn't even flinch.
kaufsss1 . 8y ago My 16 year old daughter got leukemia and was the strongest person I have ever seen. She was in the hospital and asked if she could play with the little kids to help them take their mind off things. She got an infection and passed away. She was an amazing girl. Cancer sucks!
OMFGSteve 8y ago While not overly brave as there was no real danger. My 5 year old has definitely charged people who were tickling his brothers as a protective instinct while yelling Don't touch my brothers!! Other than that, he also alerted everyone to a scorpion in the kitchen, instructed the youngest to get an adult while he stood guard and kept everyone back insisting that it was dangerous and to avoid it's stinger. (Не watches a lot of Discovery channel and Animal Documentaries)
8y ago My best friend when | was little was a badass. Story: When I was four | was swarmed by bees, making me very afraid of them. When I was ten, Rene and I were black raspberry picking, I sat on a log and a swarm of bees angrily came out. I panicked and started screaming, running, and flailing my arms. Rene came running over to me and grabbed my arms, told me to calm down. I look at her and in slow motion, a bee stings her lip, comes out, and stings her lip again. She grabbed
. 8y ago Not so much heroic but pretty bad ass in my opinion. My 9yo son got bit by a dog on his face, a pretty deep gash, fat was poking out. Не never cried, not from getting bit, or the shots to numb it/antibiotics, not even during stiches. He's one tough little man.
slice_of_pi 8y ago My stepdaughters are pretty metal. Youngest was riding her bike at the age of about six down a steep hill, when the chain came off, and she obeyed Newton's Law of Inertia right into a garage door at the bottom of the hill. Knocked out 4 of her front teeth, and had to go to the ER to make sure she wasn't hurt worse - there was blood everywhere. I got there after she'd been there about fifteen minutes already - I wasn't at home at the time and had to come across town. I walk in, and this conversation occurred:
babsamazon 8y ago My mother, at 4 years old, escaped from home in the middle of the city, crossed a street and when the police found her and asked her name, she lied so she wouldn't have to go back home. Se had the police force and her (negligent) mother stumped for a whole day. Didn't witness but is 100% true
ethman42 8y ago | did not see this but heard the story. A young girl needed a blood transfusion and her brother (I think about 5 years old) was a match for her. So the doctors asked him if he would give her some blood. His parents both said it was the right thing to do. Не waited a few moments before agreeing. They hooked him up to do the transfusion and he looked very worried, but that is to be expected. (I still hate needles) After a few minutes the young boy asked a doctor, How Long until I
dinosaregaylikeme 8y ago de My nephew has two moms and just a kid. Не is five but since he the age of three he knew the term homophobic. His moms get harasses sometimes for raising him. Sometimes in front of him. But no matter who the person is, My nephew gives them a hug. Doesn't matter how large and scary the person is, my nephew will give them a hug. Не tells his parents and his uncles (us) that angry people just need to feel loved again.
thenyanmaster . 8y ago Not really an event but my cousin was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2 and throughout his years of treatment he was definitely one of the bravest kids I've ever met in my life.
8y ago This is more something I used to do, but my aunt would come to my apartment and tell me not to go in dark rooms in fear of ghosts (In Thailand people are extremely superstitious) but I would storm in looking for them and trying to make friends
Workacct1484 . 8y ago Cross a street to get to his younger brother who was crying. I was still living in Serbia during the Yugoslav wars. That was not a street I was willing to cross at the time. A few others had tried.
shogunrua91 . 8y ago There was a giant flying insect during class and a five year old used his hands to grab it while | panicked in fear.
Maroll 8y ago This is something i saw back in the early 2000s. Some man is trying to rob a poor woman. I run to help, but before i even move a feet this little boy who must have been around 6 or 8 runs over and gives the biggest punch i've seen right in the mans nuts.
einsibongo 8y ago Aged three my younger son caught me teasing/tickling his little cousin, he got inbetween us gave me a stern look and said: Leave her alone I'm a guy that looks like I own several Harley's and he's three, backing up his cousin. I fear for the poor bastards that are going to try to be her boyfriend, my son will be relentless.
jazzismyjam 8y ago Return to her home synagogue community where she had been raised as a little boy to celebrate her bat mitzvah as a girl. No pomp and circumstance, no newspaper articles to highlight her as inspiration porn. Just a bold fucking move by a confident kid.
einsibongo 8y ago I witnessed 7 yo me diving into the deep end of a pool, dragging my 1 yo brother, unconscious, across to the shallow end and scream for help. Не got some CPR and a couple of nights at the hospital. Not the best beginning of an international trip to Spain.
carolinablue199 8y ago Very general, but when I worked in radiology, I x-rayed some very sick children and some of them were just amazing at how calm and resilient they were. We fixed a kid with a volvulus using air - it's very unpleasant, uncomfortable and he was awake the whole time; he held perfectly still. I've seen a toddler with lymphoma - yes, a two-year old -who handled chest x-rays like a champ despite a sore port a cath. A young boy with a massive pleural effusion positioned himself for a decubitus shot (lying on your side) when he could barely breathe and
melisexyassbeast159 . 8y ago I was once at a pool party and saw this kid run up to a bee on the ground and stomp on it barefoot. I was surprised he didn't get stung and that nobody seemed to notice. Later on he was about to do it again and the mom grabbed him before he could. All the parents started talking about how dangerous it was not knowing he had already done it.
RoosterShield . 8y ago Disobey my wife. I'm a grown ass man, and even I'm not that brave.
girlspeaking 8y ago I worked at an after school program and this kid in my program was playing on the monkey bars when he fell. I looked over to see him walking calmly towards me with his elbow bent completely backwards. I tried very VERY hard to stay calm, but was internally flipping out, running to my binder of emergency contacts and protocols, trying to reach his mom and control the 10 other kids in my care who wanted to see what was going on. Honestly, he kept it so cool the whole time. We must have waited 20-30 minutes
PirateRic 8y ago I watched two teenage boys testify during the sentencing portion of a trial against the man that had molested them (I knew both of the boys and the man involved). They were both scared out of their minds as well as embarrassed, but they did a great job. I couldn't imagine that I would have been able to do that at their age. It's very hard for your heart to swell with pride while it's breaking over what they had to go through.
boopbaboop 8y ago Not witnessed, just told to me. My aunt (my dad's older sister) is metal for a lot of reasons, even as a kid. One time, my uncle is walking with her home from school. These bullies had been picking on him for a while, but this is the first time my aunt had been there (IIRC she was in kindergarten or first grade at the time, he was older than she was by a good couple of years). The bullies start to push my uncle around. My aunt, a fucking kindergartener, takes her rucksack and starts beating
katie3294 8y ago Stay in foster care. I'm a child and family therapist who works with a lot of foster kids, and the system is awful. Most kids have to move every 2-3 months because there is a huge shortage of foster homes in my state. They usually get no advanced notice. The social worker just shows up, tells the kids to pack their bags, and they're off to another unfamiliar house. A lot of kids in foster care have ptsd or attachment issues, and they're required to establish a new relationship with a caregiver every time they get moved.
