22 of the Most Dangerous Situations People Have Been In

Danger has a way of sneaking up on you. One minute you’re enjoying a nice winter hike across a frozen lake, and the next you’re realizing that the lake wasn’t so frozen after all.

One Redditor bravely remembered one of the most dangerous situations they found themselves in. They were aboard a ferry in Thailand that was stuck in a nighttime storm. Enduring rough weather while far from home is scary enough, but they quickly realized they weren’t the only ones terrified — the crew was praying and sobbing in the corner. Thankfully, their prayers were answered, but it was a close call.

Other Redditors have shared the perilous situations they’ve encountered all over the world, including those featuring remote caves, the Albanian mountainside and a stranger’s car in New Orleans.

Bonifratz 12y ago I went swimming in a big river with friends. There was a small rocky island some way into the river. I'm a pretty bad swimmer, but I made it there without any problems. Later, I wanted to swim there again, but from a different starting point. This time, the distance was even smaller, but it was against the current, which I underestimated. I got exhausted quickly and started to seriously struggle. I can't say how close I was to actually drowning, but the thing is that I really wasn't sure if I was gonna make it or
cosgus 12y ago Driving down a mountain side with no rails in albania when | realized my brakes were shot completely. Used a hand brake and almost drifted off the side of a mountain. This was just last week. Today in bosnia an old man started grabbing my nuts repeatedly. Not relevant but still lol. - 33 ...
1y ago In highschool my friends and I would go swimming at the local quarry we called Ice Box. About 50ft deep and with cliffs that ranged from 20ft to 75ft high. There were so many times we came close to drowing with the nearest road being a quarter of a mile away. 160 ...

throwawayxtc97 12y ago Throaway. Anonymous gay sex. Blowjob. His truck. Huge abandoned parking lot--middle of nowhere. Finished him off. Strange and then stranger. Не goes into a trance. Eventually comes out of trance and drives me back to my car. Не was so strange that as | exited his truck I thought to myself---he's a serial killer. pubelNyourSOUP 12y ago Was surfing and got my leash wrapped around one of those huge pipes that extend into the ocean. Was pretty much drowning as the waves were crashing into me and slamming me into the pipe. Two lifeguards saved my life. I was too shocked and out of breath to even thank them after they got me untangled and to shore. I am pretty damn grateful though. 10 ...
1y ago The time, my female 20 yr old self hitched a ride in South Lake Tahoe with a guy in a pickup. Не said he needed to stop off at his mom's before taking me to my destination. Не pulled off the main road into a trailer park making too many turns to remember, finally pulling up to a trailer. I had my hand on the door handle ready to run when his mom came out and grabbed his laundry from the truck. Не took me to the store and I walked all the way back, no hitching.
iWriteYourMusic 10mo ago Tree well collapsed under me in a side country area. My group didn't see/hear me and they continued on. I was lucky that my board dug into some thicker snow in my heel edge so I was only shoulder deep. It took me about 2 hours to get out. 222 Share ...
BornToSweet_Delight . 1y ago There was a short-cut path we took as kids to get to school in the 1970s. It involved walking across a small (30m - 100') gorge on a 400mm pipe to get to the other side - the alternative was an extra mile or so. None of us considered what might happen if we fell off the pipe. 332 ...

NoDontClickOnThat 1y ago Pre-internet, in the prior century, I wanted to beat a snowstorm while on a cross-country drive. Weather started out as nothing special - turned into a blizzard with white-out conditions. I couldn't see the freeway surface, then I couldn't see in front of the car. I was behind an empty logging truck (it had poles sticking up in the air that I could see). The truck kept going and I stayed on his a$$ for the next hour and a half until I could see the road surface again. White-knuckle driving. Really (young) stupid judgement, on my part. -
hiimk80 1y ago | live in rural Alaska and when I met my bf I quickly learned he loves ice fishing. We went to a lake (my first time) beginning of winter to go ice fishing. | later learned that the lake we went to has alot of hot spots, and people fall through the ice frequently never to be found again. It's apparently one of the scariest and most dangerous lakes to ice fish on in the area. Had no idea lol 1.1K ...
PM_WORST_FART_STORY 10mo ago On a ferry during a storm at night in Thailand. When the crew are busy praying and crying in the corner, it's probably a good idea to keep one hand on the life preserver the remainder of the trip. 635 Share ...

Realistic-Dentist405 10mo ago | was hiking in WA state near a cliff. I tripped over a root and slid down a ~45 degree bank after which was a 300+ ft straight drop. I managed to stop myself about a foot from the edge by grabbing another root. My life flashed before my eyes. - 306 Share ...
earnestweasel22 1y ago Exploring a natural cave on private land without the proper equipment, knowledge or guidance. Night before Easter in 1973 and four friends and I decide to go into a cave we had heard about in Southern Illinois after dropping a few white cross. We each had a cheap flashlight and wore boots but that's about it. Three of the friends were brothers and fought the entire time (at one point physically). We did ok going in avoiding the water by traversing along rocks but after about three hours our lights started going out. After turning around we
The-Real-Dr-Jan-ltor 1y ago When I was around 12 years old I went for a hike with a friend - we didn't tell anyone where we were going and my parents thought we were playing in the backyard. Well our hike took us through the forest to a frozen river which we decided to walk across. Since it was spring the ice wasn't as thick as we thought it was and I ended falling through. My friend quickly grabbed me and pulled me backwards out of the water. The water was flowing surprisingly fast and I remember at the time thinking how
NeedleworkerSuch9714 1y ago . Edited 1y ago This was in a very isolated area on the Washington/Idaho border at my step mother's cabin (Pend O'Reille River) .Was outside walking about and saw a massive moose likely 50 yards from me coming through deep brush. Moved in to get a much closer look. It was a female and her (calf? foal?) then came into sight behind her as I got closer. Luckily she really paid me not much attention and continued on towards the river bank. I later found out how absolutely stupid that was and how fast I could have
bunslightyear 1y ago While in New Orleans, I got in a car I thought was my Uber but wasn't, ended up getting driven and round and eventually robbed at a gas station by the people who were my Uber Luckily they only stole my phone and debit card but easily could have been taken somewhere and the shit kicked out of me or worse. Cautious-Ad1986 1y ago Mid-70s, Ted Bundy era, Salt Lake City. I hitchhiked occasionally at night. Got a lift from downtown to the suburbs in a white van. Halfway there is the turnoff to Park City and the driver says to me Now is where | usually take off up the canyon and have my way with you. You should be grateful that I have other things to do tonight. 15 minutes later he drops me off a bit away from my house and I go to open the door and you can't open the passenger door from the inside and
keepoffmedian 2y ago Navy guy here. Aircrew. I had every right to refuse to fly, which probably would've encouraged the rest of the crew to follow. The conditions were a series of swiss cheese holes lining up and I called it out. I allowed a higher ranking person to talk me down. I ended up being right and we definitely could have died that day. The aircraft was struck by lightning so many times it was hard down for months, and we almost ran out of fuel. Roughest few minutes of my life in a situation we never should have
