Ernest Shackleton was a renowned explorer who was the first person to reach the South Pole, and led a few more absolutely disastrous expeditions to the poles before and after that. Shackleton died of a heart attack aboard the Quest while failing to map out Antarctica in 1922, and the mission was called off, marking the end of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
