14 of the Funniest Community Notes Roasts from The Week of November 13, 2023

Earlier in the week, Pope Francis flexed some of his papal authority and removed Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas from his position of faith. The conservative bishop openly opposed the slightly left-of-center pope and often criticized his reformation efforts to make Catholicism more inclusive, especially toward the LGBTQ community and your local divorced dad. While the Vatican shifted things around, namely temporarily appointing Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin to oversee the bishopless diocese, some people on the timeline received a lesson in Catholicism they might have skipped in Sunday School. When the Lepanto Institute spoke out against the decision they condescendingly asked, “The pope is a dictator who has the authority to exercise unlimited power without due process?”

The Virginia-based organization “dedicated to the defense of the Catholic Church” received their answer in the form of a short, but scathing “Yes.” The curt community note was accompanied by a link to the papal supremacy Wikipedia page outlining the dogmatic principle that the pope has “full, supreme and universal power over the whole Church.”

An organization that should know better wasn’t the only account getting the Scarlet Letter treatment via community notes this week either. Others popped up on tweets vastly exaggerating the amount of partners Taylor Swift has had, a gamer excusing the fact that he just kinda sucks and an account that failed basic zoology.
