And he never closed an eye

Some Muppets fans might be disappointed to find out that the Muppets–Knives Out mashup they’ve been waiting for isn’t going to be exactly what they imagined.

For years now, people on social media have been suggesting/demanding that director Rian Johnson make a Knives Out movie in which Daniel Craig’s gentleman sleuth Benoit Blanc solves a murder mystery involving the Muppet characters.

Johnson explained that he took both the crime genre and the Muppets genre seriously.“On the Internet, the notion of a Knives Out Muppet movie comes up a lot,” he told The Hollywood Reporter, “and I wanted to get you guys together here so that I could explain why that’s a bad idea. It’s not a ‘bad idea,’ but I love and respect Muppet movies too much, and also Benoit Blanc movies. They’re so different. The reality is, if you put Muppets in a Benoit Blanc movie, it would feel totally wrong because they would be getting murdered.”

Meanwhile, Sesame Street just released a new Knives Out parody, “Forks Out,” in which a puppet detective named Beignet Blanc investigates the case of Cookie Monster’s missing triple-berry pie. Johnson endorsed it, but some fans weren’t convinced.

At the same time, some fans called out Zootopia 2 for what they saw as parody cowardice. The film’s directors, Jared Bush and Byron Howard, revealed that the movie nearly included an extended recreation of Clarice Starling’s first meeting with Hannibal “the Cannibal” Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs — but with talking animals.

Quickly, fans blasted the decision, arguing that parodies of adult movies should be a cornerstone of children’s entertainment — and that avoiding them is making kids’ movies dumber.

People on Twitter can get really inspired by all the drama. This week’s funniest tweets include notions about Christmas shopping, exercising and PlayStations.
