There used to be a consensus around what was normal, because the possibilities back then weren't endless. You were cool, or you weren't, and that was pretty much it. There weren't different kinds of cool or different kinds of uncool. All kids had to watch the same shows because there wasn't anything else for that demographic. Everyone grew up in similar environments, and the main difference was all about social and economic differences.

Now, however, it's getting harder and harder to understand what's supposed to be normal. What was once outrageous, today is the latest trend, and vice versa, but nobody knows exactly why. Most likely, there is no ‘normal’ anymore. We're hyperconnected, but we don't have a lot in common, so there's no reference to look for.
