If you ever expected Jim Downey to rant about the dangers of cancel culture, prepare to be disappointed.

The prolific SNL writer recently spoke with Variety about the ever-shifting relationship audiences have with comedy, explaining, “Sensibilities have changed — tightened, in some ways. You can say audiences have become too politically correct or too sensitive, but arguing about it doesn’t really help.”

“What matters is not just what people find funny, but what they’re comfortable being seen laughing at. In a live audience, that’s a big factor,” Downey elaborated.

Andrew Schulz, however, has a different bone to pick with the state of comedy, and zeroed in on comedians who have “hot takes” about the industry. On a new episode of Flagrant, Schulz and his co-host Akash Singh, bemoaned comedians like Anthony Jeselnik and Marc Maron, saying, “If people know you for your opinions about comedy and not your jokes, you’re probably not funny. Simple as that.”

While we all struggle to remember a single joke Schulz ever told, the funny people on Twitter are churning out tweets you’ll never forget. Today’s funniest include those about pity cheesecake, Adventure Time’s princesses and a game of Scruples.
