In the eyes of TV Guide, it wasn’t always okay for South Park’s Sparky to be openly gay.
Series co-creator Trey Parker revealed that the television publication “had a problem” with the title of “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride,” and changed the episode title to “Big Al’s Boat Ride” back in 1997. “In ‘97, to sort of do this openly gay stuff, especially in a cartoon, was pretty weird,” Parker recalled of the Season One installment, which centered on Stan Marsh facing his homophobia to accept his beloved dog.
Golden Girls also faced backlash for its portrayal of gay relationships. Writer Marc Cherry recently shared that the show’s creative team were sent death threats over “Sisters of the Bride,” which featured Blanche’s brother, Clayton, announcing that he was engaged to his partner. “Sometimes the progress comes at a little bit of a cost to those who do it,” he recalled.
As for 2025, the world isn’t only more accepting but also has infinitely more hilarious tweets. Today’s funniest include those about off-brand cars, Whole Foods’ playlist and brand new theorems.
