It took several weeks of negotiations and one very public social media crash out, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone have finally struck a deal with Paramount. The agreement, which is estimated at $1.5 billion, was reportedly approved by Paramount’s future parent company Skydance Media.
Speaking of South Park, production assistant Phil Stark spoke about working on the show’s first season back in the ‘90s, sharing that Parker and Stone took a very hands-off approach to management. “They aren’t the kind of guys who walk in and say, ‘Hey, how’s your weekend?’” Stark explained, noting that while Stone was “a little bit more” open to banter, Parker “definitely isn’t.” This no-nonsense approach also extended to Comedy Central, with the pair bashing their corporate overlords every time they received an edit.
“Their thing would always be, ‘Fuck that! Fuck that guy! They say we can’t do that? Fuck them!’ And that was the spirit of almost all the pitches that ended up happening.”
