On Thursday, Paramount and CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert — and the Late Show franchise as a whole — is being canceled.
While it seems more likely the cancellation is a retaliatory move to gut the platform that allows vocal opposition to President Donald Trump and his $16 million settlement with Paramount, CBS claims the decision was “purely financial,” and a report from Puck claims The Late Show loses around $40 million a year. Regardless, Trump definitely celebrated.
In his own cancellation announcement, Colbert chose to focus on the legacy of The Late Show, and his staff, who helped make the show what it is, and will be facing unemployment in 10 months. But other high-profile figures and late-night hosts didn’t hold back. Jimmy Kimmel offered a succinct “Love you Stephen. Fuck you and all your Sheldons CBS,” while Senator Elizabeth Warren (along with the rest of us) questioned the integrity of the decision, saying, “CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump — a deal that looks like bribery. America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons.”
