There’s a lot you could say about The Simpsons. It’s been on air for too long. It stopped being funny in the early aughts. It’s weirdly good at predicting the future. But fortunately for Matt Groening and company, “it’s a clip show” can’t be counted among them.

In a newly-unearthed interview, Groening and showrunner David Mirkin opened up about the staple Simpsons format that wasn’t, revealing that Fox “kind of forced" their team into making clip shows during the series’ early days. “It was something that, uh, saved money, uh, and… mainly saved money,” Mirkin recalled, noting that his team “fought against” the mandate.

As Groening and Mirkin reflect on their show’s past, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich is looking toward the future, assuring fans that they will see “Hank Hill in a whole new way” during King of the Hill’s highly anticipated revival season. “I think people are going to love the new King of the Hill,” the exec told Variety, adding that Hank 2.0 “is so perfect for our times without trying too hard.”
