Anyone making a musical biopic after the release of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story knows they’re in for a challenge, but James Mangold didn’t let that stop him from telling Bob Dylan’s story in A Complete Unknown. In fact, he “found Walk Hard hilarious” even after it parodied one of his own movies (Walk the Line). The director told Entertainment Weekly that it’s “ludicrous” to think a genre is six-feet-under once it’s been satirized. Mangold said that he wasn’t going to be “satire’d out of telling the stories,” the same way that Robert Eggers shouldn’t have been scared to make Nosferatu just because Young Frankenstein exists.
Although Eggers’ monster flick hit screens this week, his gothic nightmare was bested financially by the live-action Lion King prequel that nobody asked for. Disney’s Mufasa clawed its way to number one at the box office after being handily taken down by Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the week before. It’s expected to remain in the top spot this weekend, but it has a long way to go if it’s going to match its billion-dollar predecessor.
