The reason is the chlorophyll that gives them their green pigment starts to break down as the days get shorter and the nights cooler. This allows the leaf compounds known as caretenoids and anthocyanids to assume more prominence.
Caretenoids supply the colors yellow, orange and brown. Anthocyanids supply the red — and require sunlight to make the magic happen. That’s why you often find a red fall tree facing south.
