Appliances should be silent at all times

It’s that time of year again. Barack Obama’s intern dropped the former president’s yearly list of favorites in everything from film to literature to music. This year, his favorite films include three of his own productions, which he was at least transparent about, and 10 others ranging from unsurprising to “did Obama really watch that?” These films include The Big Short-ification of Nike in Ben Affleck’s Air and Teyana Taylor’s breakthrough performance in A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and OneBarbie missed out on the presidential honors, but the other half of Barbenheimer did make Obama’s list.

Another movie ignored by Obama was Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw. Perhaps A24’s tragic tale of wrestling’s most cursed family wasn’t Obama’s cup of tea, but the boys who brought the Von Erich brothers to life didn’t need Obama’s approval when they had someone else in their corner during production. In an interview with GQ, Harris Dickinson shared that he, Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Stanley Simons had a group chat that became a treasure trove of inspirational messages. Dickinson told the men’s magazine that after long hours of shooting emotionally devastating scenes that left everyone “knackered,” Efron would message the boys things like, “You guys did so good today. Proud of you. Love you,” which did more for them than presidential recognition ever could.

Meanwhile, the timeline is full of gems worthy of a spot on a year-end list. Today’s funniest tweets include those about the worst late-night text to receive, a cringe-free term of endearment and the person who has never seen Yoko Ono and Jada Pinkett Smith in the same place at the same time.
